Etymologist providing expert testimony on the colloquial use of "daddy".
actually i don’t know if they made stepmom porn illegal. the wording of the bill is ‘simulated incest’ so i think we’re less than a year away from it being tried IN COURT whether saying “step” before “brother” makes it legal to have sex while stuck in a washing machine. stupidest country on earth

While it's true that JD Vance won his Senate race in Ohio—and it's genuinely no small accomplishment to become a U.S. senator—this was his closest competitor in the Republican primary:

It always feels weird and inaccurate when someone calls me an "etymologist," so I'm trying on alternate titles for size:

Nouncromancer
Semantic spelunker
Suffix smuggler
Root whisperer
Prefix plumber
Diction didact

Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Etymologist: the cup is an Old English borrowing from Late Latin
Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Marine biologist: there is not enough water in the cup to be suitable habitat for a shark
Optimist: the cup is ½ full

Pessimist: the cup is ½ empty

Land and climate expert trained in counterfactuals: ok, how much water was in the cup yesterday? How much was in the cup last year? And how much was originally in the cup before humans started altering it for drinking purposes?

8/10 times I tell people I’m an entomologist they think I said etymologist. I wonder if the reverse situation happens to etymologists. 🤔

I am going to have to hire an actual etymologist as an editor to make sure I am getting these names right. I think Hypophthalmicthys is like "lowered-eye fish" and Isthmophragmospora is like "narrow-walled spore". Uriunceustreptus I cannot figure out, except that streptus = twisted

Etymologist here! I think that's a ground beetle, specifically from the genus tetragonoderus

Do not take an etymologist to the ER with you, because they are liable to interrupt the doctor's important discharge instructions with shit like, "Why do they call it a Miami J collar?" and "Ah, NPO! 'Nil per...os?' Is it 'os'?"
