parts of Florida might freeze tonight and you'll NEVER guess what tiny wimpy wormlets actually need to be frozen in order to exit diapause...that's right, it's feefoo

Eubranchipus stegosus is a fairy shrimp known from two places: two ponds in Worth County, Georgia, and one pond in Taylor County, Florida. I haven't found it on my own yet, but there's almost no way it's naturally restricted to these two places because they're so geologically different.

ponds

From my foray this weekend. Springtime Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus vernalis). This male has claspers to grasp the female in mating. They live briefly in Spring cold waters of vernal pools, eating algae & tiny critters.

I study fairy shrimp and clam shrimp. The southeastern USA species have never been properly inventoried, so every few years a new species turns up in some weird location (D. proeliator in FL in 2019, E. stegosus in GA in 2020, E. insularis also in 2020, several other weird things with no names yet).

I told the stupid thing to "check GBIF", then "yes" and suddenly WOW NEVER MIND GUYS Dexteria floridana is actually a Florida endemic and thus probably found in Florida, but it's still unconfirmed. lol I'm so angry

I just want to live where I live and study shrimp. I don't need an office, I don't need any equipment besides ethanol and vials, just let me live in central Florida and look for these. I'm so scared to look for a job again but no one pleasant has any money

Male Eubranchipus shrimp (lower) thinking really hard about trying to mount a male from an entirely separate family of shrimp who is also three times his body length

Oh yeah, lots! Oregon has a rare namesake species, Eubranchipus oregonus, which is winter-adapted like the ones I work on here in FL. There are also several Streptocephalus (generalists), and Branchinecta gigas, the giant fairy shrimp, in alkali pools probably inland towards Idaho. E oregonus:

Hot off press. Resolution not great . . .but timing was right. Largest concentration of fairy shrimp ( #Eubranchipus) I’ve ever seen. These are likely E. vernalis, the only one of 2 Massachusetts species not listed. Many males; no brood pouches. Early season? March 26, 2025.

Eubranchipus holmanii are also present in NJ though I believe they're fairly uncommon?

This week's field find is an Eastern Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus vernalis) spotted in the vernal pools in Heartland Forest, Niagara Falls, by one of our Volunteer Corps.
Did you know that fairy shrimp are only found in vernal pools as they provide safe habitat from fish?🦐

Absolutely! They are everywhere on earth, deserts to mainland Antarctica. Vermont probably has Eubranchipus and Streptocephalus fairy shrimp, and dozens of genera of ostracods and copepods

I’m gonna go with this particular Oregon Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus oregonus) from when I found a previously undocumented population of them
November 19, 2024 at 7:58 AM
did some googling and even found a map that tells me I should be looking close to our local river because apparently Eubranchipus grubii likes hanging out there and is quite common. I'll be keeping an eye out 👁️
