#Eumachia
Me: You named the Not-Aspyce in your novel "Eumachia?!"

Crystal: After Eumachia Pompeiia who...

Me: I sound like Uzumaki! I don't want to be some Junji Ito's cosmic horror bullshit.

Crystal: You could be the Uzumaki who is going to br Hokage.

Me: Really? 🤦‍♀️

Crystal: Believe it!!

So glad I suggested Eumachia just to see Matilda’s entry 😍
It seems #ClassicsTober was not a flash in the pan for Matilda*. Here is her second contribution, she had to tell me who Eumachia was!

*if the aim of this was to get people to engage more with ancient history, it is certainly working for her!

Una donna imprenditrice nella #Pompei del I secolo d.C.: #Eumachia. Curiosità di un mondo troppo spesso declinato al maschile.

Unbelievable. Women were contributing. Sometimes directly as Eumachia in Pompeii. They should know at least the basics...

Eumachia had enviable influence in C1st CE Pompeii. Daughter of a manufacturing merchant, she married into an illustrious Pompeiian family and held a position as priestess to Venus Pompeiana. Her influence extended to buildings and euergetism!

I also included Julia Felix as a pretty major character, and Eumachia makes an appearance. But I fell in love with Murtis after reading about her in an essay by Sarah Levin-Richardson.

Eumachia

🧵 Despite her humble origins, Eumachia became one of Pompeii’s most prominent citizens. She inherited a fortune from her father, a wealthy brickmaker, and married into the prestigious Numistrii Frontones family.

Solo el buscar y preguntar ha empezado a sacar a la luz fenómenos "en femenino", más allá del rescate de los nombres. El evergetismo femenino en Roma era muy habitual y era una forma de adquirir poder por parte de las mujeres, pero se había obviado

I absolutely love the Online Companion to the Worlds of Roman Women! It’s such an amazing resource. Having all that valuable info in one place online makes it so accessible to everyone—truly fantastic!

#ClassicsTober24 Day 2. Eumachia. More people should know about Eumachia. When they say 'women in Rome had no agency', tell them about Eumachia, who had her name plastered all over a major building, had statues, and a grand tomb. Yes, she was rich, but she could decide what to do with her money.

Eumachia funded a grand building in Pompeii’s Forum, dedicated to Concordia Augusta and Pietas, possibly to support her son’s political career. Its function is unclear, though it may have served as a wool warehouse or auction house, with an elegant marble entrance.

Day 2 Eumachia. A woman of humble beginnings who socially climbed to priestess, patron to the guild of fullers and civic benefactor. So her statue says, but is she just supporting her son to be elected to the office of duumvir? Don't underestimate a mother's love. #ClassicsTober24
