The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is what arrives when you order a puma off of Wish.

They're the largest apex predator on Madagascar, where they act to control the local lemur population.

They're the 'big cat' equivalent in family Eupleridae, which is a sister taxon to the mongoose family.

This was all via co-operation with Laurie Godfrey, Margaret Lewis and colleagues and those of us who worked on Prehistoric Planet Ice Age have been keeping it a secret. TODAY sees publication of Cryptoprocta bevatabe in Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, here... www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Forgot the alt text, so: a fossa, a hyena, and a mongoose.

Eupleridae (Madagascar carnivorans), herpestidae (mongooses) and hyanidae are each other’s closest relatives.

ok so a ring-tailed vontsira is one of the members of the eupleridae family

which is only found in madagascar!

there are like 4-5 other vontsira species and they're the smaller malagasy carnivores

Hey all!

If you're following me you likely know who I am. I use camera traps to study wildlife, mainly #mammals, and mainly carnivores, though I've worked on deer. Most exotic place I've done science was in Madagascar

a ring-tailed vontsira for yall

The fossa offers another clue. Its ancestors rafted to Madagascar ~18–24 Ma, where carnivorans were absent and primates were abundant. Today fossas specialize on lemurs, while work by @magratnj.bsky.social suggests a diversity of extinct SFS euplerids. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... 59/n

Lmao, I got a master's from Duke in environmental management. I was part of a long term study about competition between native carnivores and invasive species in Ankarafantsika National Park. I was cool before I resorted to the law.

I focused on animals that were ecologically meaningful to the question. That meant animal-eating (or 'faunivorous') mammals around the same general size as the thylacine.

I also gathered up a range of ecologic info: diet, prey size, body mass. I had to understand all the comparatives!

You totally should!! Feliformia is great!! 💜✨ I swear, the Lemur Furry Chat spends more time talking about Euplerids and Vivverids than we do talking about Lemurs, half the time 😂 (To the point where we even made a spinoff Eupleridae side chat!!)

4/6 Eupleridae (carnivorans endemic to Madagascar), Ursidae (Bears) and Felidae (Cats) families have the worst conservation status. The greatest numbers of threatened carnivore species are found in forest, shrubland and grassland habitats. East and South Asia hold great numbers
