Yes! Rooks, Eurasian Wren, and Eurasian Jackdaw! 😊

Good morning! We are off in about an hour on the first day of our driving tour. Today it’s Waterford — I believe we’re visiting Waterford Crystal — and Kilkenny for the Medieval Mile. Cool misty morning.

I really like the wren on the farthing. Google says 'The small Eurasian wren was chosen because it was one of the smallest British birds, fitting the smallest-value British coin'

Who decided that the Eurasian wren should be called troglodytes troglodytes? Talk about making an insult and rubbing it in.

When I first moved to Scotland in December I stayed in a hotel while looking for a place. While staying there one of these little guys woke me at 3 in the morning with their song, pushing me to update my Merlin to Scotland at a rather uncomfortable time.

Almost all wrens (ie species closely related to the Eurasian wren) are in the Americas, as shown in the third picture. It’s therefore an interesting example of a diverse group of birds whose English names (Carolina wren, Pacific wren, etc.) are based on the name of a single European species.

This is a Eurasian Wren. Ever since that morning I’ve been trying to get an okay picture of them. Their genus and species name Troglodytes hints at why it’s a challenge. Meaning ‘cave-dweller’ they tend to the underbrush.

While their beautiful song makes their frequent presence known, their tendencies make them harder to spot and even harder to capture in good lighting. This low-lying stump tempted one into better lighting.

Goodnight BlueSky Folks!

My final capture of the day is an Eurasian wren I photographed a few days ago while on a walk. It was taken with my Canon EOS R50 and this is my second sighting of one!

#til the world’s smallest parrot is the buff-faced pygmy parrot, found in Papua New Guinea. To give an idea of scale, they’re slightly smaller than a Eurasian wren. They live in burrows, eat lichen and — as far as all the photos I’ve found suggest — are in to vibin’.

Today’s birds. The siskin seems here to stay, the meadow pipit as well, and the mistle thrush is back after her summer break. #birdlove

Ah, yes could be on passage. It was in a patch of scrub so didn’t think of that. Plenty of reed warblers across Kent in the reeds. Had thought initially it was a wren but pretty sure it isn’t an Eurasian wren.

Looking at the dodgy photo I took I saw a white eyebrow so Eurasian wren it must be.

For AB's theme #Contrast a Great Egret's landing. And I think the Eurasian Wren offers enough light against the darkness of the forest.

I was never able to take a photo of a Eurasian wren so close, but the bird was occupied with singing that it paid little attention to me 💚 #photography #birds #birdsinging #wren
