I’ve read that the Gripen could be adapted to use the ‘Eurojet EJ200’ engine, similar to that which powers the Eurofighter Typhoon.

I en värld där det för stunden ser ut att Europa behöver vara mer oberoende av USA avseende försvar; vad innebär det t ex att JAS 39E har en amerikansk motor? Vad skulle ett motorbyte till SNECMA M88-4 eller utvecklad Eurojet EJ200 kosta och är det ens möjligt för en JAS 39G/H?

Wow did not hear this news. I wonder if Eurojet EJ200 (Typhoon engine) or Snecma M88 (Rafale engine) could be fitted in place? Otherwise might Rafale might be the only option. I think Typhoon has some ITAR components, correct me if I am wrong.

Wow did not hear this news. I wonder if Eurojet EJ200 (Typhoon engine) or Snecma M88 (Rafale engine) could be fitted in place? Otherwise might Rafale might be the only option. I think Typhoon has some ITAR components, correct me if I am wrong.

Regardless of which engine (the Rafales or Eurojet), putting a non-Nazi States of America engine into the Gripen to replace the US-derived F404 would be a monumental undertaking.
It would be better to just design a brand new European light multi-role aircraft instead. Many, many years away.

Seeing some rumors that SAAB may be offering new customers a version of Gripen with the GE F414G engine replaced by Eurojet EJ230. Slightly more compact, significantly lighter and higher thrust, possible with thrust vectoring, but more expensive. That'd take care of the export license for sure.

Turkey could try to buy Eurojet EJ200 engines instead? It seems weird that they would go to the US to buy engines for the plane partly designed to reduce reliance on the US...

I can only think of a smaller build of the Rafale engine (certification costs). The Eurojet consortium won't help due to partial cannibalization effects on the Eurofighter (middle sized buyer nations).

**: The issue with Gripen: It uses GE's engine. Eurojet, Rolls Royce, Safran are alternative suppliers, the yanks need to be outta the supply chain! I wouldn't want to source a washer from them!

If the US does not approve, both SNECMA M88 and Eurojet EJ200 variants might be revisited for future JAS 39E/F.
Which would be bad news for GE and future US weapons exports...
