#Eurocodes
There’s so much interesting research and innovation in Europe around sustainable materials. But unfortunately since US and Canadian codes don’t reference (essentially, trust!) the Eurocodes or other international standards, everything has to be retested at great expense for the North American market

Btw – the Eurocodes are specifically structural standards, so they apply here. But elevators, windows, electrical, plumbing, egress – none of that is in the Eurocodes. If you don’t know exactly which kinds of codes/standards you’re referring to, safer to say “European codes and standards.”

this is partially true.

lack of uniform regs is a hurdle for prefab.

eurocodes allow a product certified in austria to be used in all of the EU.

however the issue in the US, is the regulations themselves.

our codes result in poor and inferior buildings. universally.

uniformity won't fix that
Prefab would take off if we had uniform building regulations vs a regional hodge-podge which clearly gives the advantage to local specialists. And I mean local specialists like Weyerhauser which sells engineered products nationally through a hodge-podge of regional regs

CEN-CENELEC (which writes the Eurocodes) has had success in promoting them elsewhere in SE Asia too – namely Malaysia (eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/malaysia) and Cambodia (eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/news/eurocod...). A note if you were not aware: despite the very expansive name, the “Eurocodes” are…

I am just learning that Singapore switched to Eurocodes in 2013-2015. Does anyone know if they are happy with the change?

Here is a map of Eurocodes adoption progress. The most interesting to me are the seismically active countries outside of the EU, like Turkey and Serbia (CEN-CENELEC also has a pretty active program to spread the Eurocodes to the western Balkans, although they have a leg up here because all of those…

Some countries even delegate their standards TO the EU. The Balkan countries defer to the Eurocodes, almost everybody on earth defers to CEN/CENELEC (via the ISO) on elevator standards.

I’m curious, @dbonowitz.bsky.social, if you have any thoughts, general or specific, on how the Eurocodes are viewed in the earthquake world compared to other EQ-prone countries’ standards (Canada, Japan, US, NZ, Chile, etc.)

I'm thinking in similar cases like "why don't they just use eurocodes for bridge design and validation". Unless you're doing some signature design, you can just take an example from any university of technology course, adapt, run calculations and in worst case, it will be overbuilt/expensive.

One thing about this: the practices are NOT unsafe. Basis for almost all construction calculations in the EU are the Eurocodes (EC). Countries base their own norms on them, usually on recommendations by eng. societies. EC always set a safe standard, what comes after that is a matter of other factors

AFAIK, the Eurocodes only cover structural elements, the nonstructural things are covered by various EN standards and/or EU or national legislation.
(In any case, if any US state considered breaking free from the IBC, the ICC would probably send out their lobbyist SWAT team in full force.)

I've tested using it in structural engineering to produce code compliant lists of checks to various design codes - eurocodes, American nuclear codes, including clause references - for unusual design situations. All ouputs seems to be sensible so far.

The classes are defined in the Eurocodes and it's a matter of fact if modification of a building causes it to change classes. If you can let me know a bit more context, I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Even better if they let builders choose at their option to comply with Eurocodes or Japanese code instead
