I wasn't expecting to see birds on this trip, but there were a few European Shags dotted on the cliffs at Arnarstapi today. What beautiful birds they are!

Watching the #EuropeanShags at Dunbar Harbour on #SuperSeabirdSunday. This juvenile is transitioning from its soft brown down to developing its flight feathers on its wings & trying out its wing drying pose. Lots of jostling around in the nest too with its siblings.

Watching the head & neck stretches as part of the breeding displays of the #EuropeanShags on the rocks just off #DunbarHarbour #EastLothian - its head crest is very prominent and a vibrant green sheen on their feathers.

The nesting sites are bare and the #EuropeanShags are congregating on the lower rocks - juveniles building up their strength and skills. One colour ringed Red-ALE (left leg) with silver number ring (right leg). Will check out ringing details further …

Another look at those stunning #EuropeanShags in #Iceland. 🇮🇸 Their deep green coloration isn't as obvious, but their crests are right up there, as well as the brilliant yellow just behind their gapes.
