The city council could give the green light to changes to the layout of roads and pavements in the city centre, if councillors agree next week. The biggest share will be spent on George Street where £20 million will be spent on pedestrianisation, planters and benches - but no trees. The City of Edinburgh Council is to spend £31 million from the Visitor Levy on improving the public realm in the city centre. This will cover three areas - George Street, Princes Street (Edinburgh’s “most important and iconic thoroughfare”) and the Market Street area, with funding drawn down in the next three years.

No. There was a plan to have a city centre triangle scheme but it seems to have fizzled and GAS remains a horrible traffic sewer rather than the promised #EuropeanStyleBoulevard

I didn’t think the previous Lab administration was all that keen either, but as a visitor to London Oxford street should be a great #EuropeanStyleBoulevard like Unter den Linden, the Champs Elysée or Great Ancoats St and it just… isn’t.

It probably isn't doing Lab's chances in the by-election any good that their candidate held the MCC transport portfolio and was firmly in the 'fudgy compromise' camp, because if there's one thing that's electoral kryptonite, it's someone who looks timid.
