When I was researching Tolkien and existentialism for my talk last March I realized that although JRRT was a fellow traveler with the existentialists in a lot of ways he completely rejected the existentialists’ focus on individualism.

As a relatively recent Baseball Sicko, one thing I am still grappling with is how to follow and enjoy a sport for 162 games when my favorite team makes me insane with rage on a daily basis. How do you guys do it and stay mentally healt—wait, okay, I see the answer.

When I was in high school, I fell in love with the existentialists. Like many teens, I started to think deeply about death and meaning for the first time. And I came to feel the existentialists were right; in an absurd, indifferent universe, we have the responsibility to create our own meaning.

in 2020 I discovered I had not really given enough respect to the existentialists because up until that point I had not suffered enough. it is now 2025 and I wish we had the writings of the weird-as-shit ancient greek guys because I think I am coming to understand insanity as a philosophical program

You start with Descartes' "I think therefore I am" and sift through hundreds of years of Existentialists up through Sartre's BEING AND NOTHINGNESS. Once you've done that, you begin to realize these very smart, credentialed people have a child's understanding of "intelligence." Hence the problem.
