oops all negative externalities

The GOP loves to tout the positive externalities of low taxes ("we're empowering job creators!"). But they never mention the negative externalities ("we're empowering creeps!").
I had a moment this morning when I realized that all these evil men would just have been depraved internet trolls if we actually taxed the rich.

sorry conservatives, the externalities WILL be priced

the negative externalities of billionaires are definitely far higher than I appreciated a few years ago
It's become abundantly clear to me that the mere existence of billionaires entails an intolerable social cost.

This is not something I believed even 5 years ago

Regulatory capture and negative externalities for everyone.

I’m adding a third

“We don’t want the environmental externalities of the factory near us”

Great policy - these vehicles cause a lot of negative externalities
Norway recently implemented a weight tax on all vehicles (including electric!!)

NOK 12.5 per kilogram over 500 kilograms. EV lobby groups and big car companies that have been aggressively bloating EV models for years are *very* pissed off about it.
Nå kommer det store bil-sjokket: Avgiftseksplosjon
Ekstra avgift innføres for elbiler. Og når elbilene skal bli dyrere, blir alt dyrere.

as I‘ve gotten older I’ve become more of a civil libertarian. I don’t need some complicated explanation of how someone’s oppressed. just people should be able to do what they want unless it causes big negative externalities
Are you fuckers gonna make me actually defend furries. Like I don’t particularly think it’s a Civil Rights Issue, but people have the right to do what they want in their private lives. Definition of not hurting anyone
Tommy Tuberville: Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community. It's terrifying.

When people argue that renewable energy sources are too expensive, remember that we don’t invade countries to seize wind farms and there are no solar cartels. Fossil fuels have enormous geopolitical, public health, and climate externalities.

economics professor completely revising the slides on “externalities”

tl;dr price the fucking externalities

negative externalities is now silicon valley’s only innovation
It’s infuriating to me that I need to evaluate media to determine whether it’s AI generated now. The great “time saver” technology wastes incalculable time and energy for people who want to retain their grasp on reality

In principle, it seems like just as there should be things like carbon taxes for activities with negative externalities there should also be payments for getting vaccinated due to the positive externalities.

If we did an honest look at externalities, AI massively *subtracted* from the economy.

Mass water and power usage for dancing panda videos are value-negative.

Idk, my position is kinda “it’s a useful tool that’s clearly here to stay but is also over hyped and has substantial negative externalities”
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

the humanities have literally nothing to say about externalities
"There is absolutely no negative externalities to colonizing space" should get you mandatory humanities education though.
Sorry but you are way too humanities brained if you think space colonization is problematic because earth colonization was often accompanied by bad stuff. There are no people on the moon. The bad things involving colonization were the things they did to people living there. There are no people there

i think we should internalize the cost of negative externalities
May 11, 2026 at 6:08 PM
Oh man do I have really bad news for you about how China handles externalities
May 21, 2026 at 12:14 AM
The lack of understanding of externalities will destroy this county and the world. Pollution has negative externalities. Proactive healthcare, research, and food and housing programs have positive externalities. The “market” could care less. People’s lack of understanding of this is dire.

Bigger cars cause more negative externalities such as wear and tear on the road, for example. You don't think people should be responsible for that?
June 29, 2026 at 4:53 PM
Fellas, is it communist to use pricing to address negative externalities?
