Christ, how much do you think externals get paid?
A suggestion on how UK universities can save money and reduce faculty burnout in one fell swoop: drop the surveillance culture of moderators, externals, etc., etc. Hire good people and trust that they will do their job.

This bit is in a footnote. Both these figures seem high to me. Maybe Cambridge allows someone to supervise 15 PhD students? 35 externals is high for someone so young.
