There's an argument against ever paying ransomware/extortionware hackers under any circumstances and I can see this example becoming exhibit A.

In some way this is soft-core version of extortionware. Although you pay them money willingly already for them taking your data unless you say no. 😅

The advices on this blog are scarily on point.

I was reversing some Android malware and found CSAM embedded in the app. It was extremely disturbing, and I don’t know how content moderators deal with that on a regular basis. (The app itself was extortionware: we found these pictures on your device so pay a fine to avoid prosecution, etc.)

Crypto might go up but in my view there's simply no problem it solves well except evading regulation:

Useful for extortionware
Useful for scams

I have no idea what value it will have, but every problem solved by crypto is better & more efficiently solved by traditional, centralized tools
