Keeping the faculty lines free from specialists with extramusical knowledge ensures that the dept can continue to center Western European art music, without the fear of internal critique from colleagues whose work challenges the canon.

my hot take: the "musical–extramusical distinction" has little to do w/(social) power and more with the fact that "musical autonomy" isn't a problem if you don't think transcendent concepts + think ab "autonomy" as immanent to what it supposedly "suppresses" (i.e., narrative, subjectivity, meaning).

I'm torn between "That's bananas" and "Yeah, I can see it." His solo stuff had some of the highest highs of any of Beatle solo projects, but also the lowest lows. That said, he probably has the largest extramusical cultural footprint of any of them via his film production company.

That NME review of Eat To The Beat is as full of characteristically patronising latent misogyny as anything in the alleged golden age of the UK music press. It isn't a great album for various extramusical reasons but here be my somewhat more considered views:
