Interesting but not entirely reassuring read about "a fringe movement called extropianism" said to influence Musk.

If you don't know what TESCREAL is:

"Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, (modern) Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism" coined by @timnitgebru.bsky.social & @xriskology.bsky.social

TESCREAL stands for Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism -- and is coined by @timnitgebru.bsky.social and @xriskology.bsky.social 👇🏻

my deeply, deeply petty objection to it is that it's supposed to be in chronological order by Cosmism predates Extropianism by like a century

TESCREAL stands for "transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism" and is a term coined by Timnit Gebru and Émile P. Torres in 2023.

The teleological endpoint of superintelligence as an ideology (and religious movement) is human eleminationism. Just as the endpoint of extropianism is Earth-abandonment and environmental catastrophe.
“Simply put: I don’t know where this endless march of shortening the act of living leads us to. AI promises to free up time. But if what it spares us from is learning from our friends, writing, painting and exploring the world, then what, actually, are we meant to do with that time?”

Yeah, TESCREAL is a cult—and very powerful and wealthy one.

TESCREAL
=
Transhumanism,
Extropianism,
Singularitarianism,
Cosmism,
Rationalist ideology,
Effective Altruism, and Longtermism

Worth reading to get a better picture of the irrational belief system guiding many in the tech world.
At last, we're starting to see coverage of much of AI culture as the heathen cult it is. I wish, though, they'd build on the fuller work of @xriskology.bsky.social & @timnitgebru.bsky.social re #TESCREAL.

Effective Altruism - it's part of the TESCREAL acronym (Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism), also known as "the list of ideas from a Harry Potter fanfic that are destroying the planet"

it's all so dumb
September 20, 2026 at 3:30 PM
i don't know what to call it. "reactionary" feels much too mild. it's more like the precise inversion of extropianism

"Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism"

These people sound insane.

one of my favorite answers to this question comes from @timnitgebru.bsky.social and Émile P. Torres: the "TESCREAL bundle" which denotes "transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism" firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph... #ai

Fwiw the Tech Won’t Save Us episode of @parismarx.bsky.social interviewing Timnit Gebru gives a brisk run down of the TESCREAL terms, including extropianism.

WIRED magazine, April 2003: “know your transhumanists.” A side-by-side comparison of extropians and singularitrians.

A nice reminder that these people have been obvious dweebs for decades. Even old-wired could see that.

Yeah, it's all Californian Ideology stuff. Anyone who's read any of Tim Leary's 70s stuff like the Terra II plans knows exactly where Musk gets his ideas from (fourth-hand via Robert Anton Wilson, the Extropians, and people badly explaining Extropianism to him in small words while he's high on ket)

damn extropians, they've ruined extropianism
watching crazy-eyed extropianism go from "humanity will be able to spread across the stars and it will be glorious and strange beyond any imagination" to "I need to make enough money to buy galaxies once robo-god invents FTL so i can have the most galaxies in my galaxy wallet" i swear to G-d

In particular, some members dreamed of not just rising above the Earth, but rising above their own humanity: they were the first transhumanists, who sought to augment themselves beyond their biological constraints. One strain of transhumanism that arose was particularly influential: extropianism.

"In doing this, we delineate a genealogy of interconnected and overlapping ideologies that we dub the “TESCREAL bundle,” where the acronym “TESCREAL” denotes “transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism” [7].
