While the end duel of FAFDM is more clearly inspired by The Bravados, Vera Cruz, The Last Sunset & The Tin Star (a future🧵?), both TBH & FAFDM have climaxes where the older bounty hunter/killer is unfairly outgunned only to be saved by the young gunman with whom he had prior conflict...

Clint's snake grip Colt SAA doesn't have brass parts in A Fistful of Dollars because Clint "borrowed" it from the Rawhide prop department in the US (it's from the ep Incident at Alabaster Plain). FAFDM had extra Uberti repros of Clint's Colt made that have brass parts that pop up in a few scenes...

The hired gun getting paid by the law is an unavoidable scene in bounty hunter stories, yet Leone seems to be purposely subverting TBH's take on it. In TBH, the lawman judges the bounty hunter's seeming amorality. In FAFDM, the bounty killer judges the lawman's obvious corruption...

FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE is a great step forward from A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. FAFDM is tighter, wittier, and Clint Eastwood and Lee van Cleef have marvelous screen chemistry. Even Morricone's music is even better.

FAFDM is an All-timer

FAFDM must have been released before TGTBATU because they're virtually the same movie ....

FAFDM has the hardest ending shot of the whole trilogy and it's not close

FAFDM is I think my fav movie of all time so of course I’m biased but it’s not like I’d ever complain about the other two

the thing about FAFDM is it's the only one of these where Lee Van Cleef lights his pipe by striking a match on Klaus Kinski's back, and that goes a long way

Yes, RA is taking some bold, ruthless decisions, and being backed for them. He needs the luck. Nothing else has worked for 11 years. He’s less Clint, more Van Cleef in FaFDM, no? 😅

As good as FISTFUL was when released, it was FAFDM that solidified the Euro-Western as a money-making genre, underscored Leone as a top-rank narrative innovator, and propelled Van Cleef and Eastwood toward international stardom.

Truly this movie does not have a fraction of the lean mean energy of FAFDM but also, Tuco in that grimy confederate jacket getting absolutely demolished while Angel Eyes watches in his pristine navy blues? That’s cinema, baby.

Yep! This one got me because I’m a HUGE fan of the climactic standoff at the end of FAFDM with the pocket watch so I’m floored I missed it. 😂

For sure, a classic. Again though For A Few Dollars More is better than Raiders of the Lost Ark for me.

I feel like Fistful of Dollars and FAFDM both had more shape and an idea of what they were, they just took different turns to what was originally imagined by Leone.

In 1961, 3 years before Leone, the first Western "Tierra Brutal" was filmed. Also known as The Savage Gun, using many locations that will be reused by future Western productions, such as the Turrillas church (seen in FAFDM-1965) that appears behind Alex Nicol's back. #FFilmsky 📽️ #Almeria #Andalucia

A very cool spin on the Western, for sure. One of my favorites too.

Another one of my favorites is Open Range. There are of course the expected GOATs, but Open Range is a comfort movie for me. As well as For A Few Dollars More. All of Sergio Leone's westerns are fantastic but FAFDM is my favorite.

FAFDM is so precise. GBU feels like it was written by committee. A whole movie of “oh!! wouldn’t it be cool if—“ Fun to watch! but sprawling and aimless in a way that takes the wind out of its excellent individual parts, for me. I want to be convinced otherwise!

Time to finish the Sergio Leone Dollars trilogy tonight with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Hopefully it’s as solid as For a Few Dollars More (and it should be - it’s a classic). FaFDM had an interestingly unhinged villain and a great hero team up. I expect this one to be a bit… messy. :)

So Sergio Leone remembered Lee Van Cleef from his career in Hollywood, despite Van Cleef's career being spent making walk-on roles. Before 'FaFDM', his last roles had been a tiny role in 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' and a role in 'How the West Was Won' in which he had no lines. That was 1962.

Absolutely; and I've owned this multiple times on DVD, BD - this is in a different league. I will get FAFDM down the line and replace my Kino GBU 4k (though it pains me to do so). I'm *trying* not to replace everything again, but it's hard when the upgrade quality of pics I love is so good...

There’s also an argument to be made that FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE takes place before A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. Colonel Mortimer shooing up Manco’s hat in FaFDM could be seen as an explanation as to why there are a couple of bullet holes in Eastwood’s hat in AFoD.
