hot take: AI/ML, AI ethics/safety conferences (eg, FAccT) should develop and implement mechanisms that let authors flag industry-critical work to avoid review by industry-affiliated reviewers

Ok #FAccT folks - I'm still looking around for people. Who am I missing?

he askes the facct community to question intentions and motives behind technology not just measure and document performance of the algorithm

It is astonishing how much better the reviews for FAccT are than for ARR (at least from the sample I'm seeing): detailed, specific, engaged, in-depth, and supportive

I am just so impressed with the FAccT reviewing community, and wish we could replicate that elsewhere!

I love FAccT because of the people. This community is friendly, fun, and passionate about the work they do.

I'm so proud and honored to have gotten to work with these particular amazing people on the #FAccT2025 program. Talia, Sina, and @shakirm.bsky.social are THE BEST.

Many libraries now use automated tools to measure diversity in their collections.

We examined how these tools work and whether library workers find them useful. A complex case study of libraries navigating automation, DEI, & shrinking public funding.

as the facct rebuttal period is in session, let me repeat what i've always said: critique is service! identifying & mapping the problem space is in & of itself a legitimate scientific contribution. we can’t proceed to “solve” a problem if we don't have a clear & comprehensive understanding of it

Marking all papers I'm reviewing for FAccT as "having potential ethical issues" because they all talk about AI
