FEWSNET temporarily cut off famine tracking coverage of Somalia, Afghanistan, and Yemen. Apparently should be back as of Sept but concerns about politicization, especially since humanitarian aid has gone down so should expect to see greater incidence of hunger. Trump admin may not want us to know.
Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen disappear from the latest US famine reports: ‘Trump is politicizing the analysis’
The omission of the three countries from the US-run FEWS NET platform has alarmed experts and aid groups. Following the outcry, the State Department said it will resume coverage of the crises from Sep...

FEWS NET is a global famine early warning system and, like a lot of public interest data and infrastructure systems, it's collapsing. So, I wrote a bit about why, some of the wider trends affecting the space, and what we might do about it.

via NPR Topics: News — The highly regarded FEWS NET network stopped posting data on Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen -- then says it will start posting again in September. What's the reason for this back-and-forth?

Weird that former USAID Raj Shah makes a statement about FEWSNET cutting off information for countries facing hunger, but doesn't seem to condemn or criticize the decision. Instead, it's a newspeg to talk about their own program. Weird. www.rockefellerfoundation.org/news/stateme...

For political reasons, the Trump regime has decided that it is inconvenient for people to know or care that humans are dying of hunger in certain countries.

Fewsnet was previously operated as a humanitarian public good: to help the world know when and where hunger was emerging.

Not anymore.

The first thing the Trump Adminiostration and DOGE did that most of you don't know about is cut all funding for FEWSNET and shut it down.

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network projected that 5–5.99 million people in #Syria will need humanitarian food assistance between October 2026 and January 2027. It said northeastern and northwestern Syria will remain in the Crisis phase of food insecurity.

The death toll due to shuttering USAID is all down to Musk, Rubio and the orange. USAID was the largest global provider of food aid that other donors and humanitarian actors worked around. The Famine Early Warning System, FEWSnet, also had to stop but now runs a skeleton service with other donors.

Food shortages persist in #Syria, with more than 6 million needing aid, #FEWSNET warns. Despite 2025 gains, more than 80% of households remain food-insecure. #WFP assisted 6.7 million people in January 2026 but needs $175 million over the next six months.

Map of food security in East Africa from FEWSNET. IPC phase 3 (crisis) in orange, 4 (emergency) red, 5 (famine) brown. Mortality rates climb >4x between them. Vital to focus support where it most urgently needed. But for that need underlying survey data on people and markets.

The first thing was the closure of FEWSnet, the famine early warning system, used by development and humanitarian agencies around the world. It's despicable, and will not be forgotten. Nor will Starmer, Reeves and Lammy slashing UKaid still further.

I really miss FEWSNET, I feel like I don't know what is going on and what sort of state the weather is doing. As they had a network and a monitoring, which no one else does. It is really hurting when it is now gone. The technicalities & professionalism was needed in the field.

1 chart captures the Trump administration's assault on climate change action 😱

Includes cuts to #USAID for renewables and adaptation ❎

But misses cuts to humanitarian programs (such as FEWSNET) essential for SURVIVAL☠️

With the flood of bad news, it can be hard to get perspective on just how much damage Trump is doing.

So we made a chart to get across Trump's whole-of-government approach to wrecking the climate: at least 82 actions from 20 different agencies in 52 days. 🎁 link:
