While I love a big, modern JRPG like Metaphor or E33, sometimes it's nice to play a game that returns to the basics of the genre. It's been nice to dive into not only @ephiam.bsky.social 's games, but also @criticalgamesau.bsky.social 's 8-Bit Adventures and the original SaGa/FFLegend games lately

I forget, have you played other SaGa games? fflegend 1 and 2 are a lot more approachable than romancing saga. I think doing Red's route on the SaGa Frontier remaster is also gonna be less immediately overwhelming and scary than romsaga

definitely some overlap with SaGa here, I've heard plenty of complaints about FFLegend and SaGa Frontier being incoherent nonsense worlds setting-wise. But I think they make perfect sense as collections of places that delighted the devs, letting go of verisimilitude and embracing joy at every turn

saga frontier 2 was not directed by kawazu for the record, it's its own thing kinda like fflegend 3

Spoilers for a game that released in 1989, but FFLegend had such a wild ending that whenever somebody mentions player-protag narrative distinction, I relive that jarring moment so vividly.
Is Deltarune/Undertale the only game that incorporates the distinction between the player and the protagonist into its meta-narrative?

I rather liked SaGa Frontier. I played it back in the day, but the rerelease and extra content helped rekindle that flame.
I haven't played the Romancing SaGa series yet, and I remember those FFLegend games being...unique.
