Alongside Coal Action Network we took legal action to end illegal coal extraction at Ffos-y-fran opencast coal mine in 2023. Now the same mining co is trying to back out of fully restoring the site.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules.

This week, we have the High Standard Model 10. Chambered in 12 gauge, it was based on a prototype from a 1950s SWAT officer and intended as the ultimate CQB shotgun. It saw limited police adoption in the 60's and 70's.
The original gun had several strange features including a rotating stock that allowed for odd angle and off-axis shooting. It also required the use of 12 gauge Magnum loads as anything weaker than that would have trouble cycling the action. Interestingly, part of the reason for the limited adoption was the fact that even USING Magnum loads the guns were notorious for having trouble cycling. You can see the why when you put the gun next to the High Standard Model 8 shotgun, essentially the same system. Note that the bottom model is the Model 10A, which had a flashlight integrated into the design that could not be removed. Later models, the 10B specifically, had a flashlight that COULD be removed. Note that, even ignoring the model 10's had shorter barrels, they were also RADICALLY shorter compared to a full sized shotgun of the day. The Model 10A had a flashlight in place of iron sights. The idea was at the distances in question the flashlight and the shotgun spread would be close enough to 1-1 that you could assume if it was lit it was going to get hit. This style of shooting is VERY situational at absolute best and has mildly fallen out of favor although it's still present in some practices and standards. A diagram that shows the Model 10A disassembled, highlighting what the componentry is. The receiver is very easy to see in this format.

Ffos y Fran must be fully restored and made safe, as promised to the community – that means filling the hole. It does not mean leaving dangerous spoil tips in place and doing the bare minimum.

This is a matter of public safety and environmental justice.
