#ffxivfanfic #xivfanfic #fanfic The sound of the chronometer is one that rings loud against the resonance of the quiet air. Against a crackling hearth, against the rhythmic ease of deep, and continued breaths.  It is a metered tempo. It is symmetric. Predictable. Familiar.  it is loud and lulling, just enough to make a man bewitched. As for so many days and moons before this—this sound would the one thing that he would always come to cherish. The only other thing within the halls of this grand manor that would move ever onward, that would remind him that time itself was not a concept that was unreal. Illusory. Immaterial. Fake. Even if it was a construct so seemingly designed for everyone else but him. For his own sense of time had stopped moving forward so very long ago. To be one of the many things he'd lost, shattered against the broken fractures of a mortality that'd been taken from him—to have been one of the heaviest prices he would pay, for a heart that would no longer beat.  And though time itself had lost its meaning in the continued wake of his own existence, G'raha had found that there would always be a comfort in the sound of the hand that would never stop moving. In the ticks and tocks that echo its way across the time piece, in silence, in symphony— ln death.    Today he matches the sound of that clockwork time—he matches it very particularly, to her.

Wonder who those sailors could be talking about? 🤔

#FFXIVFanfic #FFXIVWriters
1/3/2026 - A request/order | Musing/Plotting aloud - Crowded/Loud room | Smell of something old (books/Wood/food etc) Qoribucha hummed a low note of disgusted as he sniffed the ale the barmaid set before him. It reeked of stale papers and sharp vinegar — older than the Calamity no doubt and almost as great an assault on the senses as the raucous and cantankerous tavern he found himself in. The roaring shouts as drunken sailors wrestled for dominance in piss poor taverns such as this was nothing short of a torturous onslaught for his sensitive horns, but Qoribucha had a job to do and he wouldn't let his captain down because he couldn't handle an oliphant's chorus. "Bring us another round of ale, wench!" shouted one of the sailors as he threw his empty tankard just shy of hitting the barmaid — whether by his aim being worse than a blind man's or thanks to her seeker reflex he knew not. The lowlife stood tall on the table — well as much as a plainsfolk could — and pumped his fist into the air as he shouted out, "Tomorrow the Admiral's dog comes back to town from her little escapade to the other city-states, and as a traitor to us all I say we use her to show the Admiral what we really think about her supposed rehabilitation program!" "You know, you really shouldn't make plans like these in such public locations, Shkr," Qoribucha said loudly, cutting through the cheers of the patrons who were already far too many sheets to the wind for even Thaliak to count. "T'would be a misfortune if they rattled against the wrong horns." 10/29/26 A request/order | Musing/Plotting aloud - Crowded/Loud room | Smell of something old (books/Wood/food etc) Qoribucha hummed a low note of disgusted as he sniffed the ale the barmaid set before him. Artoirel had no idea when it began – likely not until he was a teenager at least or just before his final growth spurt, perhaps around then he finally understood that the feelings he had were deeper than just the hormones of young men. It was before his mother died, he was certain of that. He would never forget the mix of stern disappointment and pain on her face the first time he coughed up the bright red oldrose petals in her presence. That was before he knew of the cloudsbreath and periwinkle that had rooted deep in her lungs, before he saw the plants snake their way up her throat in seek of the light and choke the life out of her.

"Foulques, please," he called, hands raised nonthreateningly. "You know this isn't– Celestaux wouldn't want this," his voice cracked as he said it, the loss still so fresh and making it all worse. This wasn't meant to happen. Celestaux was never supposed to– G'raha cut off the thought before he could finish thinking it. Now wasn't the time to get sucked up in his own grief, not when Foulques had already let it consume him. The man who stood in front of him was more of a terrified, cornered animal than anything – a version of him that G'raha had never witnessed… the version of him that existed before Celestaux came into his life.

His Warrior of Light and Darkness lived behind his eyelids every time he closed them. He saw the long planes of her pale throat, the sharpness in her dark eyes, the way they flashed momentarily at any sign of a challenge – things that most wouldn't notice if they hadn't been staring at her, watching her constantly for weeks. Watching as she slayed sin eaters with a single blow, not even minding as the white plaster of their blood sprayed across her face while strong muscles flexed with ease. Watching as those same muscles relaxed under the spray of water as she bathed, vulnerable in a way no one on this star was allowed to see. Watching as sleep finally took her, her body relaxing while her face still twisted and contorted with a pain and a longing he knew not of. A pain he wished to know of, one he wished he could take away. But that was not what the fates had in mind for him. The Exarch had no right to her heart, the mix of blooms and rot in his lungs told him as much.

The Exarch ran as quickly as he could through the gates of the Crystarium, holding his robes in one hand as he pushed forward. There was the cry of a sin eater going down, having him run a little faster to the gate’s entrance. “Everything alright, Captain?” he asked as he got close, straightening up to look like the leader he was and adjusting his hood a little lower over his face. He was sure he heard Lyna say that everything was fine, but anything that came after that zoned out for a moment as he caught sight of the Warrior of Light.

"Who is he?" she asked him, her tone accusatory as she didn't even bother to let G'raha explain himself. And Foulques only laughed tiredly at the question… leaving G'raha wondering how he would answer. Foulques had never been the first to jump to explain what their relationship was, leaving Celestaux with his kind eyes and easy smile to do the talking or letting G'raha ramble through an explanation that usually left people more confused… But now he had to put it to words, had to explain something to this woman since G'raha's words were clearly no good here. "He's…" Foulques started, letting out a breath and slowly turning his head to look at G'raha.

Finally his plans had worked, finally he had done what he'd set out to do a hundred years ago when he first arrived from the Source. Finally the Warrior of Light, the First's new Warrior of Darkness, stood in the flesh on the First and finally the Exarch felt like maybe things would go according to his plan. But it wasn't only that – it wasn't only that he knew finally there would be a chance to save the home that he'd built here and save the Source in turn. The Exarch knew there was something else gnawing at him, burning a hole deep down in his crystallized heart. The young man he'd once been was awakened by seeing the Warrior again and there was no putting him back to sleep. And so, shameful as it was, the Exarch let himself watch. He took in every ilm of the dear Warrior from his Tower. It'd been so, so long since young G'raha Tia had met him. So, so long since he first observed the man's strength, his kindness, his sincerity, his beauty…

“I will have you know,” he carefully said, instead of all these examples and memories brought to his mind’s eye, “I do not spend that much time on practice, myself.” “You cannot be serious,” immediately replied Zoraal Ja, his eyes zeroing on him, as if what he had heard was a personal offence. “Such skill cannot come from talent alone.” It was an affirmation, a proclamation, not a question, yet Darren decided to answer it all the same. “I do practice,” he amended, “but not just in sword swinging. I also cook, as you saw yesterday, and write a bit on the side, among other pursuits.” “You write,” said Zoraal Ja, dry as the Thanalan sands. “And I suppose, much like with your cooking and your sword swinging, you are an expert at poetry.”

"It'll be alright," Foulques finally spoke up quietly. Celestaux knew it was meant to be comforting, that Foulques was trying so hard to be of help here, but he couldn't stop the snort that he let out at the comment. "You don't know that," he said, the exhaustion creeping into his tone. He didn't have to look over to his husband to know that gave him pause. Of the three of them, Celestaux wasn't the pessimistic one – in fact, he was usually the most optimistic of them. He wasn't meant to be the one who doubted things would turn out alright. He and G'raha were always the ones believing, hoping that all would be okay… But now he'd gone and turned the tables and he could already sense Foulques trying to recalibrate, to figure out what to say.

"I'm coming with you," Foulques said, ignoring the few sounds of protest from the Scions around him; most of them didn't matter to him, never really had, he only had his eyes on Cel and he watched his lover look back at him tiredly. "You're going to try some stupid self-sacrificing bullshit 'for the good of the Star' if you're left alone, I'm not having it. I'm coming with you," he insisted, almost frantic as he said it. Cel swallowed hard and cupped his cheek – if Foulques didn't know that all eyes were on him, he might've let a tear slip down his cheek before Cel even opened his mouth. "No, I need you to stay," Cel whispered, smiling sadly up at him, "I can't risk losing you too."

Foulques stood on the balcony of the Crystarium, tucked in a shadow as the unending light above bared down above. He still hadn't quite gotten used to it, even after nearly two years of living on this reflection. The light here lacked all warmth of that on the Source, lacked the magnificence of the sunlight that took his breath away as a child. And somehow night brought no reprieve, still just the blinding light above without pause. It made something deep in his heart ache for the citizens here, people who had never known the beauty of a sunset nor the awe of seeing the stars slowly appear in the sky above. Not that he'd ever voice such thoughts.
