Can confirm that FIYAHCON 2022 is the project from which he'd been removed because of an ethics complaint

"Theydies and gentlefolk," from FiyahCon.

(what if i whispered sweetly —or menacingly depending on how much you dislike my shenanigans— into your ear that ...fiyahcon...is not dead)

FIYAHcon set the bar and no one else has met it yet
I went to the online FIYAHcon that was 24 hours a day, panels around the globe, and i hadn't stayed up for an all nighter at a con in literally decades those panels were LIT

And I honestly thought it was going to become a thing

lol. lmao.
I am begging any of the big online writing workshops who Value Diversity to schedule at least ONE (1) class at an eastern-hemisphere-friendly time. (Hire a workshop leader from here, even!) There are so many cool sessions I'd love to throw money at, but I simply cannot be alive at 3 AM.

My favorite is that the Fiyahcon panel composition benchmark was at least 3/4 BIPOC by default

and if you weren't at FIYAHCon 2021, you probably have zero idea what you were missing. I basically took hour long naps and drank coffee because the panels in the middle of my night were amazing. I remember thinking "This is an undeniable good of having to adapt to covid."

and it never repeated.
So I will say this as gently as I can: given the current state of the world, cons (especially held in the US) should really keep or enhance their online programming instead of eliminating it. I understand it takes resources to run a hybrid con but the alternative is to exclude the rest of the world

Ya know, I just don't have enough FIYAHCON mugs. How might I rectify this I wonder aloud

okay there are a LOT of people asking what i thought were easily googleable questions about pitching nonfiction writing. so here is a quick adapted version of a pitch workshop i did at FIYAHCON a few years ago. every good pitch should answer these questions:

I love the Ignyte Awards and I cherish my finalist medals. This is a thread. Get to know this award and how it operates, because it's remarkable.

(P. S. FIYAHcon 2021 was legendary. The highest of the highs.)
Hi! So I'm L, I do a lot in SFF and one of those things I do is run the Ignyte Awards. We're a spec lit award centering the perspectives/contributions of BIPOC in genre. We came about because existing legacy institutions sustain(ed) practices disrespectful or exclusionary of marginalized creators.

Already, groups have demonstrated that it's actually not as hard as Worldcon volunteers make it out to be to run better, more inclusive, and more diverse cons. ConCurrent alone is giving Worldcon a run for it's money. Don't even get me started on how incredible FIYAHCON was.

Stellar day. Excellent Sinners panel, excellent tabling experience. Met my editor in person. Met Martha Wells. Hug from Maurice. Everyone still remembers fiyahcon. Hozier played my personal hits and then touched me. New praise for Mer from a new reader. My back is wrecked but it was all worth it.

Apropos of something...I really, REALLY miss FiyahCon.

Btw, I handled all the panelist vetting + inviting for BonFiyah. I did not need AI for that. Just watched excellent conversations unfold on Twitter + used good old search engine prompting. It wasn't perfect, but we had two great cons anyway.

between citruscon and fiyahcon and the 2020 worldcon, incredible online events are possible and it's sad that somehow people are convinced that they aren't

Had the pleasure of consulting on a virtual TTRPG con being developed by a former FIYAHCON volunteer and was reminded about these apparently super helpful post-event breakdowns from FC2020: www.ldlewiswrites.com/news-updates...

If you've ever gotten anything out of FIYAHCON (or the Ignytes), you should definitely support the growth and continuation FoF whose work I have nothing to do with but am proud of nonetheless
We are $12,680 raised by Flights of Foundry! If you're having a good time at the convention, support us and the work we do to make this event and all our other programs inclusive, welcoming, useful, and awesome.

Let's aim for $14k by the end of the con!

I keep being backchanneled to opine on the Hugo thing, and y'all, I've divested. FIYAH (also FIYAHCON once) has been on the ballot year after year for a while. They still can't pronounce our name correctly. 🤷🏽‍♀️ At some point I decided that the institutions to whom I do not matter, don't matter to me.

To be very clear. I support Erin completely. I more than believe her. As a member of FIYAHCON planning, I was present when decisions were made per L.D.. He also asked me to up vote him for the nebulas several years ago when I was not a member of the SFWA, I told him I'm not even a member so no +

Just in case I wasn't clear, me pointing out the below is not an "attack" on Tempest & Nisi; it's holding them up to their own standards as set 5 years ago. Their (absolutely correct) indignation at the 2020 Hugo Awards ceremony gave us FIYAHcon and the Ignyte Awards, and we thanked them for it. 1/

This is why FIYAHCON worked because it was teams of people who know BIPOC work. It wasn't hard to fill craft panels or Gothic panels or any kind of speculative topic. L.D. Brent and Kay knew people who were writing these topics. And this is the fundamental issue. IMO. The unwillingness to admit+

2021: At a FIYAHCON workshop on the Gothic, I think: I want to write a Gothic novel someday.
2023: I begin writing Nati, a queer working-class witch who enters a decaying colonial mansion armed w/a spell box & a fistful of rage.
Today: You get to meet her. And the doll.
