Greenhouse gases aren't evil — without them Earth would be an ice ball

But we've built a SECOND greenhouse around the first, trapping ever more heat.

It's not Earth's greenhouse that's the problem. It's the one we keep adding to

I've gotten two really nasty replies on other socials (pretty sure made by the same person) being really disappointed by the end of my FotW.

Whatever, folks can have opinions. But damn... The sting of "bigger is better" in this community.

~930,000 years ago the population of our ancestors crashed by almost 99% - to fewer than 1,300 individuals

We came within a whisker of never existing

We have to stop this happening again. This time by our own hand

The Doomsday Clock reads 89 seconds to midnight — the closest ever

Born in 1947 to evaluate risk of nuclear Armageddon, it now tracks climate and other existential risks too

But clocks can be wound back, and we need to do this NOW

Tipping points don't queue politely. Cross one - like Greenland Ice-Sheet collapse - and it can shove others over in a domino-like cascade

The climate isn't separate switches - it's a web

That's what keeps me awake at night

8,000 years ago, post-glacial uplift of Scandinavia destabilised the seabed off Norway

A giant underwater landslide sent a tsunami 20m high across Shetland and 30km inland in Scotland

Climate change can move the very floor of the sea

As well as the atmosphere and oceans, a changing climate can wake the solid Earth

When ice melted after the last ice age, the pressure release triggered quakes and eruptions.

The ground responds to what we do to the sky

1.5°C equates to key tipping points such as the loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet that, once crossed, won't reverse on any human timescale.

1.5°C isn't a slogan. It's a set of one-way doors to a different world

And it's now shut behind us

9,000 years ago, a Neolithic village off northern Israel built the world's first sea wall to fight rising post-glacial seas. They lost

The seas are rising again - fast - but we can still stop the worst

Hey, sorry I had to take down the last FotW. But comparing it to previous sizes, it wasn't big enough... lol

At peak ice age, so much water was locked up in the ice sheets that a land area bigger than India, Canada and the US combined was exposed — its name Aquaterra

The sea redrew the world map before. It's about to do so again

Sea-level now rising at ~1cm every 2 years with a doubling rate that could be as short as 10y 😕 Small numbers getting much bigger soon

1.2 billion people forecast to be at risk within 25 years

Well on our way to a Pliocene climate - sea-level eventually up 15-25m

Burnham and @labouruk.bsky.social are so far off the mark in ensuring the UK are leading the way in tackling the #climatecrisis #FOTW. No new oil and gas, support renewables properly, speed up the decarbonisation of our economy, and stop 🛑 wasting billions on carbon capture systems for fossil fuels.

The oceans have soaked up 90% of the extra heat our activities have generated + a huge chunk of our carbon

They've been our silent lifesaver. But they can't absorb forever — and what's stored will haunt us for millennia

In the last interglacial, 125,000y ago, it was hot enough for hippos in Yorkshire, while crocodiles swam in Berkeley Square - well London anyway. That world was less than 1°C hotter than today

Small number. Wildly different planet
