In Singapore for FAST-IC investigator meeting.

First walk around the beautiful botanic gardens in years 😍! Then down to work..

Excited to get started & contribute to assessment of Fosmanogepix for candidaemia at Westmead.

Morning #FPPL community....... just a quick post to ask what everyone's general approach to FH's are? Do you take more risks (more differentials) than normal in the hope they pay off as it is a one week gamble, or do you play it safer with EO picks and one or two differentials to protect rank?

🍄 Can we predict where WHO Fungal Priority Pathogens (FPPL) are unlikely to occur?

Our latest publication in The Science of Nature explores how ITS metabarcoding and interpretable machine learning can support environmental surveillance of fungal pathogens.

Pues imaginad, además, que tenéis conocimiento de que la OMS está poniendo especial relevancia en los hongos como posibles patógenos prioritarios un año antes del momento en que se estrena esa serie, y no habías jugado el jueguecito de marras.

Histoplasma capsulatum is on the High Priority list, and when I looked into the available genomes, there were only 12 genomes + 2 resequencing, and some were quite fragmented. But very little to start with. There were however >400 SRA records on WGS, so assembly time!

You all know fungal pathogens are an urgent global issue. They kill 2.5 million people annually & leave millions more with severe, long-lasting illness. Fungi target the sick and those with traumatic injuries due to climate change or war. New dianostics and drugs are urgently needed bit.ly/3P8qoKq

Our models identified environmental conditions associated with the absence of several WHO FPPL taxa, demonstrating that simple field-measurable variables can help identify low-risk agricultural soils and prioritize surveillance efforts.
