Day 7: Christmas Christmas is celebrated on the 25th December. It is traditionally a Christian celebration and marks the birth of the christ child, but it is also celebrated culturally every year by many non-Christians and known as a family celebration, thus usually celebrated in the circle of family and friends. Common traditions for celebrating Christmas include setting up a Christmas tree - a fir tree that is decorated with lights, Christmas tree baubles and sometimes sweets - gifting each other presents that are positioned under the Christmas tree before everyone opens their share of the pile, singing Christmas songs and eating a special dinner. Further traditions for the time around Christmas are baking Christmas cookies, the making of Advent wreaths on which four candles are lit - one on every Sunday before Christmas - and opening little doors on so-called Christmas calenders. These are especially popular among children because they are usually filled with chocolate and give the children an idea of how long they still have to wait until Christmas arrives and Santa Claus - an old man with a long white beard dressed in red - brings them their presents. #FQweek26 #day5 #fengqing
Day 5: Mid-Autumn Festival The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eight month of the lunisolar Chinese calender, which is during September or October. It is a festival meant to celebrate the harvest. The moon is said to be the fullest and brightest, coinciding with the time of harvest in the middle of autumn. It’s one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. During the festival, lanterns of all sizes and shapes are carried around and displayed, symbolizing beacons of light and the path towards prosperity and good fortune. Mooncakes filles with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste ar eaten. Another important part of the festival is the Moon worship - the worship of Chang’e, the goddess of the moon. In Heaven Official’s Blessing, the gods gather for a banket on the evening of the festival, to entertain themselves with games and with the determination of their popularity. For one, thunder would start to toll and the Heavenly Emperor would pour a pass glass of wine and amongst the gods who pass it on. The one who holds it when the thunder stops needs to take a sip and a mortal play about them would appear on stage - sometimes with very bold and inaccurate interpretations of the respective deity. In the following battle of lantern, it is counted how many lanterns of everlasting light each deity has received from their followers. The more lanterns, the popular the god or goddess is. As you all probably know, our beloved generals often end up beating each other by one lantern exactly. Second prompt of the day: incense/offerings 🕯️

Ghost Festival/Halloween 🎃

#FQweek26 #day6 #fengqing
Day 6: Ghost Festival The Ghost Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the solilunar Chinese calender, which is in is between July and August. It is believed that on the first day of the month, the gates to the underworld opens and all ghosts and spirits are released into the world of the living, free to wander for the whole month. To welcome them, people hold ceremonies. The most important part of the celebration are the offering rituals, where sweets are thrown as food for the hungry ghosts and then gathered by children (and sometimes adults), and incense and spirit money are offered to them. To guide the wandering spirits during this month, salvation lanterns are placed at the doors of homes and temples and lit at midnight each night during the ghost month. Furthermore, water lanterns are released on rivers and ponds, illuminating them. They allow the ghosts of those who died by drowning to rise and join the celebrations. On the first day of the eight month, the wandering souls go back to the underworld. Second prompt of the day: mystical creatures 🐺🧛‍♀️🧜‍♂️ Day 6: Halloween Halloween is celebrated on the 31th October and stems from the celtic celebration Samhain and the Christian All Hallows’ Eve. Traditionally, All Hallows’ Eve used to be - together with the All Hallows’ Day and All Souls’ Day - a time to honour Christian saints and martyrs, as well as to remember and pray for the dead, while Samhain marked the beginning of the “darker part” of the year. On the day of Samhain, the boundary between the world of the living and the otherworld was said to thinnen, making it easier for the dead souls and evil spirits to cross over into the world of the living. In popular culture, Halloween is mostly a fun celebration of horror, the macabre and the supernatural. Over time, several customs have mixed together for this day. A lot of people dress up in scary costumes and go from house to house asking for “trick or treat”, hoping to receive sweets. Another custom is the carving of jack-o’-lanterns, a tradition that derives from the legend of Jack, a man who had lived his life in sin and thus been refused entry to Heaven but had also struck a deal with the devil, hindering the devil from taking him to hell and condamning him to eternally err in the world of the living. The devil tossed Jack a piece of coal straight from hell that Jack put into a turnip and has carried with him ever since, unable to rest. Other popular activities are bonfires, divination games, parties and watching horror movies or telling frightening stories. Second prompt of the day: mystical creatures 🐺🧛‍♀️🧜‍♂️

Winter Clothes Day🧣

#FQweek26 #day3 #fengqing
Day 3: Winter Clothes Day The Winter Clothes Day is celebrated on the first day of the tenth month of the lunisolar Chinese calender, which is in late October to early November. It marks the arrival of the dead of winter and is - together with other festivals - a day for people to offer sacrifices to their ancestors. The coldness of winter is said to make the living remember and miss the dead. To protect their ancestors against the cold in the netherworld and to keep them warm, they send clothes made out of colorful papers to them by burning them in front of their graves, which is where the celebration gets its name from. The custom derives from the legend of a young woman that tried to bring winter clothes to her husband who had been forced to aid in the construction of the Great Wall. When she arrived at the wall, however, she learnt that her husband had died due to overexertion. Due to her cries and curses against the tyrannic Emperor, part of the wall shattered, revealing where her husband was buried. Heartbroken, she burnt the clothes, and the ashes covered his remains. At the same time, the Winter Clothes Day is also the day of preparation for winter. Within the family, winter clothes are distributed and tried on and chimneys are swept to ensure they will keep the house warm. Second prompt of the day: gloomy weather ⛈️

#FQweek26 #day2 #fengqing
Day 2: Qixi Festival The Qixi Festival is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunisolar Chinese calender, which is during August. It is a celebration of romantic love and often described as the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day. On the day of the festival, people celebrate the romantic legend of The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, two lovers who, after having been separated by the Heavenly Emperor and Empress, only get to meet once a year on that very day, on a brigde that magpies form for them across the sky. Today, the festival is often celebrated in a similar manner as Valentine’s Day, with couples going on dates and gifting each other flowers and chocolate. In traditional celebrations, however, young women would make offerings to the heavenly Weaver Girl, praying to her for wisdom, a good husband and a happy life. They would also partake in competitions, such as attempting to be the best at threading needles under the moonlight. Second prompt of the day: first kiss 💋

Day 1: Chinese Lantern Festival The Chinese Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calender during full moon, which is February or early March. It marks the end of the Chinese New Year. During the Lantern Festival, paper lanterns are hung in the streets and children go out at night carrying them around, sometimes solving riddles written on them. The lanterns are often red to symbolize good fortune but can also have different colors and be animal-shaped and decorated. They can be a symbol of people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones, which they will let go of once more the next year. Second prompt of the day: romantic dinner 🌹🍴
