THE GOOD Cont'd
*Unexpectedly strong financial transparency--beats several state voucher schemes on this.

Now the BAD:
*Far more paperwork for public school providers than private. This continues a trend from state voucher schemes and it's crap.
*90% revenue is all revenue, not just FSTC revenue.

All these groups have different strategic priorities, very different tactics, and are only loosely aligned on what “public ed” or even “fund public ed!” means.

So you DO get a lot of infighting—again seeing this on the FSTC now—when the Right is very much aligned on top goals.

I'm not really invested in keeping states out of the FSTC; I'm just worried making increased funding for public schools so dependent on definitionally non-public providers. I suspect "outcomes-based contracting," which @carajackson.bsky.social studies, could mitigate harms

This is a smart 🧵and you should read it. My point is narrower. In the 25 states where I’ve fought vouchers, I used data & history to address the legislation in front of me. The FSTC is better by any metric than those schemes.

Should I say it’s not, to strategically keep blue govs out? I can’t.

Let me lay out what worries me about the new federal voucher scheme and why I think it's so structurally similar to old-school vouchers, rather than a sudden jiu jitsu reveral that "goal-line interception" implies.

For me, the diff is WHERE the privatization is, not whether it's privatization
I’m not lobbying for opt-in but I’m also unwilling to downplay the real money for public schools just to strategically keep blue states out. I think the Trojan Horse is the wrong metaphor. It’s more we got a goal line interception after vouchers were driving down the field for years.
