What does early FTQC mean? It seems to be an increasingly popular term, but usage seems to split into two camps.

One is FTQC but early. So you have logical qubits with a decent distance, magic state production to support logical non-Cliffords. It's just early because you don't have a lot of it.

Quantum computers require magic to run useful algorithms. But classically benchmarking fault-tolerant magic operations is intractable.

In new work, led by PhD student Yugo Takada, we introduce an efficient classical algorithm to exactly simulate a broad class of fault-tolerant magic operations.
Exact efficient simulation of noisy logical magic states using Clifford stabilizers
The preparation of high-fidelity logical magic states is a crucial subroutine for universal fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC). Predicting the performance of FTQC and developing improved protoc...

It also makes me wonder which type of hardware will be acoustically noisy: NISQ or FTQC.

I'm thinking that it's got to be FTQC: industrial-scale machines to turn quantum noise into acoustic noise.

🚨Question to jumpstart 2025🚨

Will variational quantum algorithms / quantum machine learning provide any form of quantum utility (either exponential/polynomial advantage, in NISQ/FTQC, etc)?

👉Please, elaborate in the comments/provide citations! I really want this discussion!!

1️⃣ Yes
2️⃣ No
3️⃣ Maybe

Obsessed with #QEC & reaching FTQC? 🙋‍♀️ Us too! But something else is brewing at Riverlane...

As quantum computers scale, there's a problem...

Not enough software! 💻 That's why we're building an amazing team with Liz Durst (ex Qiskit) & TWO new folks! 🎉

There are a handful of things a QC could be useful for, and those will need FTQC. Buckle down, do the work, and keep quiet till you get there.

I gave a talk titled "Building a Quantum Computer with QLDPC Codes" at Simons. This is an overview talk on the recent developments in QLDPC-based fault-tolerant architectures, with more emphasis on high-level ideas.

Here is the recording: simons.berkeley.edu/talks/sunny-...
Building a Quantum Computer with QLDPC Codes
The early days of fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC) are rapidly approaching. Many contemporary architecture proposals are built on quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes — a subject that...

When will Quantum Computers be useful?

Our work shows that all layers of FTQC are vital in the quest of quantum advantage. We reduce the runtime making the quantum computation feasible, challenging classical methods and resulting to a predicted runtime quantum advantage.

To me these seem pretty different. One is about finding and correcting all the errors, and so is proper FTQC. Even if it is early days.

The other is more about detecting and avoiding errors, and probably paying a sampling overhead to ignore them once you find them. So still a form of mitigation.

I've started a pos-doc at Ulm in the group of Martin Plenio to work on a few topics I'm interested in which are related to quantum resource theories and thermodynamics....

The idea is to apply the resource theoretic toolbox to search for fundamental limitations on QEC, and more broadly FTQC.
