The Senate on Thursday confirmed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, as a non-career ambassadorial designate. The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello and presented by Senator Simon Lalong. Presenting the report, Lalong said the committee had screened Fasina and recommended his confirmation for appointment as a Non-Career Ambassador/High Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The committee said the allegations against the nominee had been investigated by both the lawmakers and the university's governing council and were found to be unsubstantiated. The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Abayomi Fasina, as a non-career ambassador. A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has called on President Bola Tinubu to withdraw the ambassadorial nomination of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, citing unresolved allegations and ongoing court cases involving the former university administrator. The coalition, comprising Hope Behind Bars Africa, Gender Relevance Initiative Promotion, Gender Mobile Initiative, BraveHeart Initiative, Speak Out Africa Initiative, Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocate of Rule of Law and Human Dignity, made the appeal in a statement issued on Friday.
