Japanese Furoshiki: Cranes in Flight (Early Shōwa Period) This elegant furoshiki (traditional Japanese wrapping cloth) dates to the early Shōwa period, roughly between 1926 and 1935. During this era, textile design often moved toward dynamic, large-scale motifs that combined classical auspicious symbols with a modern, graphic energy. Furoshiki were indispensable items in a Japanese household, used for everything from wrapping gifts and transporting clothes to serving as a decorative cover. The design features a sweeping flock of red-crested cranes (tancho) rendered in white, black, and grey against a muted olive-green background. The cranes are depicted in various stages of flight, their wings spread wide and their long legs trailing behind, creating a sense of upward, rhythmic movement across the square silk or cotton field. The crane is one of the most revered symbols in Japanese culture, representing longevity, fidelity, and good fortune, as it was famously said to live for a thousand years. The repetitive, overlapping placement of the birds reflects the influence of early 20th-century design, where traditional subjects were often reimagined with a more contemporary, patterns-focused sensibility.

Ok I admit it, inkle weaving is kind of fun.

I am working on making a long strap to use as a handle for one of my furoshiki.

Mostly Lunatic Fringe 10/2 cotton with a bit of Maurice Brassard 8/2 unmercerized cotton for brown/burgundy.

This furoshiki (traditional wrapping cloth) from the early Showa era (circa 1926–1935), woven from a silk plain weave with creped wefts—known as kabe ori or kabe chirimen—the fabric possesses a subtle, textured matte surface that absorbs light beautifully, allowing the brilliant dyed motifs to command the composition. The dynamic scene captures three red-crowned cranes (tanchōzuru) soaring majestically amid ancient pine trees above churning, stylized waves, a timeless combination representing longevity, steadfastness, and good fortune. The technical brilliance of this textile lies in its sophisticated application of yūzenzome (yūzen paste-resist dyeing), which integrates three highly specialized variations: utsushinori yūzenzome (paste-transfer stencil dyeing), suri yūzenzome (stenciling with multiple color blocks), and shigokizome (the application of an all-over background paste). The composition is anchored by a deep, midnight-black background achieved through the seamless shigokizome process, creating a dramatic, high-contrast void that pushes the central motifs forward. The cranes are rendered with breathtaking precision; their expansive white wings show fine, layered plumage defined by subtle shading, while their charcoal-black secondary feathers, slender necks, and distinct crimson crowns are isolated with absolute clarity through precise resist boundaries. The ancient pine tree (matsu) branches are executed using complex stencil work, layered in tones of rich terracotta, burnt orange, and warm gold. The pine needles are arranged in dense, bursting clusters of razor-thin white lines that look almost embroidered, beautifully capturing the sharp texture of the foliage. Below, the lower third of the cloth transitions into a dynamic representation of rolling waves, rendered in swirling, rhythmic lines of pale silver-gray.
