Time to deal with yet another claim regarding Viking hygiene.
This time I'm going after Ahmad ibn Fadlan ;)

On the heels of writing the article about ibn Fadlan, I reckon now might be time I should review 'the 13th warrior'... ;)

According to ibn Fadlan, an 10th century Arab traveller, the Vikings were filthy creatures with terrible hygiene.
But things are perhaps a bit more complicated than that.

Viking hygiene according to Ahmad ibn Fadlan
A lot of people say that the Vikings had very good hygiene and that this was rare and unusual in medieval Europe.A lot of other people say that the Vikings were vile and disgusting and that this wa…

some of you have not read your 10th-century caliphal emissary to the Bulgars and Rus, Ibn Fadlan, and it shows

Well, b/c the court of Nasr II is EXACTLY the place the embassy of Ibn Fadlan was heading to!

'Tis a curious detail which Ibn Fadlan describes well, but we seem to ignore amidst all the fascinating w/ his description of Turkic tribes, the court of the Bulgar Khan & his meeting w the Rus’/Vikings.

It's based on Michael Crichton's retelling of Beowulf by combining it with the Ibn Fadlan travel memoir, so be prepared for the weird orientalism of a 90s movie starring an Arab Muslim POV character played by Antonio Banderas

Over the holiday week, my sister and I decided that A24 needs to make Eaters of the Dead. Riz Ahmed as Ibn Fadlan. All the Skarsgards and Sarsgaards as various vikings. More Neanderthal stuff. Make it as weird and unnerving as the book. Redeem the somewhat Disneyfied 1999 Antonio Banderas vehicle.

I know it wasn't highly acclaimed, but I loved that movie, lol.

Ahmad ibn Fadlan meets Beowulf -- it's unique.

This!!! Love teaching the “it’s not actuallllly about the Vikings they’re a happy accident” aspect of Ibn Fadlan…
This is the actual point of the whole thing!

The mission of the embassy was in fact to bring money to the Khan of the Volga Bulgars! This becomes clear in the first few pages of the Rihlah. The Khan, threatened by Khazars, had sent an embassy to the Caliph asking for aid & defense money.

A Kroashent character design, this time, the stoic hunter, Fadlan.

Fadlan is a sharpshooter on Enora's Windship. quiet, stoic and stubborn, a little arrogant, but fiercely loyal to the rare individuals who he believes merit it.

Fascinating thread - I always knew there was so much more to Ibn Fadlan, but didn't have the knowledge really to understand it.

More people need to watch The 13th Warrior. Is a good representation of where Vikings were at in comparison to Ahmad ibn Fadlan, Banderas' character, an excellent representation of Arabic society at the time.

Did you know that the Vikings traveled and traded with not just with the Native Americans, or even the middle east as in Ibn Battuta's travelogue, the Ibn Fadlan, but also ancient India?

Oldie of Marlow in his vague explorer setting a la Ibn Rustah or Ibn Fadlan

I never quite settled on a proper name for him for that setting though.
