And relevant to my wonderings about the romantic suspense subgenre in the above post's introductory paragraphs: Margaret Wallace's "Tall, Dark—and Dangerous," from 1943. #wwii #fakeamnesia

A screencap of my Pulp Romance Story Catalogue. It reads as follows: "Tall, Dark-and Dangerous" - Margaret Wallace (LOVE BOOK MAGAZINE, January 1943) Illustrator: Unknown Unemployed and desperate, Kay fakes amnesia in the hope that it will at least get her a free meal when the police pick her up. Instead, it lands her in a psychiatric ward—and things take an even wilder turn when she's identified as the wife of a French count. Suddenly thrust into a dangerous plot she doesn't even fully understand, Kay has no idea who she can trust—and that includes Carl, her "husband's" magnetic American friend who may or may not be attracted to her in return... Features political intrigue, and the heroine gets tied up at one point. Reads like an early example of romantic suspense. Recommended.
