In the late 80s a number of F-16s were painted in the 'European One' lizard camouflage scheme and were tested in the Close Air Support role as a possible replacement of the A-10 Thunderbolt. The proposed A-16 never materialized.

SpaceX was two persons working in an carage when Elon started to pay their wages.
Then they developed Falcon1.
Then Falcon5 (cancelled).
Then Falcon9.

I think Tom Mueller is the main R&D genius behind F9. But F9 would not have happened without Elon's input.
