Faringdon (apologies to Farringdon, if you exist)
I found this folly whilst in Farringdon, built by a rather interesting guy called Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt Wilson who put up signs saying please dont feed the giraffes, dyed the local pigeons and ate meals of only one colour

A similar perspective to the Deltic photo below but from 25 years earlier. It could be 125 years earlier!

1776: Swallows withdrew at Lyndon in Rutland. Some swallows remain at Faringdon: in appearance a young brood not long flown: they were very brisk. Bat out.

1776: Numbers of swallows & martins playing about at Faringdon, & settling on the trees. If hirundines hide in rocks & caverns, how do they, while torpid, avoid being eaten by weasels & other vermin?

Pub 3365, Swan, Faringdon. A beauty, one of my favourites this week. A rare Oxon carpet 8/10. Wet led. Sensible Sunderland bitter. John the Baptist, stab vests and Morecambe all discussed. Late dolly colouring in book nonsense, but didn't spoil it.

In local news,
"Faringdon Folly in Oxfordshire will be 90 years old in November ... New research suggests the folly and its surroundings were JRR Tolkein's inspiration for the hill in Hobbiton and the wizard Saruman's tower of Orthanc."

Maybe? It's near Buckland...

This amazing roof structure, at Great Coxwell Barn, near Faringdon, was built around 1300 to serve a distant monastery. One marvels at the woodworking skills of those medieval carpenters. William Morris was so impressed he took visitors to nearby Kelmscott Manor to see it.

Here in the UK, the Faringdon Sponge Gravels (Aptian, Cretaceous) are used for making hoggin paths. They contain abundant fossils, often derived from older strata. Here a fossil Favosites coral peeps through the hoggin path in Gordon Square Gardens in Bloomsbury #urbangeology #london
