#FarmKind
I write about the food industry, so I see dumb things all the time, but this Farmkind meat-eating offset scheme has got to be the single dumbest fucking thing I have ever seen.

This is terrible behavior by FarmKind, many are already saying. I don't actually think most people buy this framing, but never underestimate how good permission structures are at soothing deep defensiveness around eating animals

Lifestyle changes are hard, but donations are easy. This graphic from FarmKind suggests more people should consider donations as an avenue for change. What do you think? Is their chart accurate?

New story from me:

FarmKind, a new-ish nonprofit, encourages people to donate to effective animal charities to offset their meat consumption. In other words, it's a "meat offset." The idea makes me a little uncomfortable, but I also think it’s necessary.

My assumption is that the Telegraph really did a number on FarmKind with this article. It's a divide-and-rule tactic. I don't think the people at FarmKind see themselves as "pro-meat" or "on the other side" to vegans, looking for "defections".

Ah, you’ve not seen it. The right-wing press are delighted this morning because the former comms chief for Veganuary has gone to work for FarmKind. She‘s now running a ‘Forget Veganuary‘ campaign, claiming it‘s better to just eat what you want & donate money to them instead.

I am on a relevant whatsapp chat, and the FarmKind people seem to think that (1) this can bring people into the movement who can't/won't change their diet (yet) and (2) it might provide an opportunity for Veganuary to make the case for diet change publicly. Both seem hopelessly naïve to me, but EA.

This is my friend, Thom Norman!

He is the co-founder of Farmkind (an organization aiming to fix factory farming) and the most recent guest on my podcast!

Just did a search for farmkind on the effective altruism forum. The top post is a principled argument against donation matching like this. Another post asks that people donating anyway not use the site. I will withhold judgement. If they move major money, great. If not yeah shut it down.

“Forget Veganuary “ is a campaign run by ‘FarmKind’

Asking people who eat meat to continue consuming meat, but to substantially donate to the charity to offset the suffering of animals!!!!

Sounds like the Christian Church and Carbon offset rolled into one!!!!

🧐

Went to look at how the stupid, counter-productive, and antagonistic FarmKind campaign is playing with funders on the Effective Altruism forums (god, that place gives me the ick). Not well, is the answer. But, it really struck me now many posts on that place look like an LLM wrote them. Unsurprised.

Happy shrimpact week! Today at 5pm ET, Lyman Stone and I will debate the merits of donating to help shrimp, with @petersinger.info moderating. And if you already agree with the pro side, a donor will match up to $50,000 for the Shrimp Welfare Project all week!

An astounding week for farm animal advocacy. The Dwarkesh podcast raised $2 million for FarmKind in a wildly successful fundraiser. Lewis Bollard's profound knowledge of factory farming, coupled with Dwarkesh's piercing curiosity, make this compelling listening. www.dwarkesh.com/p/lewis-boll...
