Étoile Roberto Bolle Invested as Chevalier of France's Order of Arts and Letters
French Ambassador Anne-Marie Descôtes Honors the Étoile at Rome's Palazzo Farnese  Roberto Bolle, the étoile of Milan's Teatro alla Scala, was formally invested as Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on Thursday, October 1, in a ceremony held in the Sala dei Fasti Farnesiani at Palazzo Farnese, the seat of the French Embassy in Italy. Anne-Marie Descôtes, France's Ambassador to Italy, conducted the investiture before a small, intimate gathering, acting on behalf of France's Minister of Culture. The ceremony itself is the formal completion of an honor first announced in August 2025, when then-Culture Minister Rachida Dati named Bolle a Chevalier of the order, one of France's four principal ministerial distinctions, recognizing, in the ministry's own language, his contribution and commitment to culture, its dissemination and its promotion. Thursday's event in Rome was the occasion for the insignia to actually be conferred in person. A Career Spanning the World's Great Stages In her remarks, Ambassador Descôtes traced the arc of Bolle's career since 2004, when he became Étoile of La Scala, describing him as an ambassador of art and a citizen of the world who has carried dance beyond national borders. She noted his performances on some of the world's most iconic stages, from American Ballet Theatre to the Opéra National de Paris, from the Bolshoi to the Royal Ballet, and credited him with bringing dance into some of history's most symbolically significant locations, extending its reach well beyond conventional theatres. Descôtes also pointed to "Roberto Bolle and Friends," the televised gala format he's built over the years, as having opened the doors of classical beauty to thousands of people who might otherwise never have encountered ballet directly. Culture as a Tool for Emancipation The ambassador framed Bolle's broader body of work around a consistent conviction: that culture itself can be a vehicle for emancipation. She cited his two-decade tenure as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, his collaboration with FAI (Italy's National Trust), and his creation of OnDance, the large-scale public dance festival that transforms the city and draws thousands of young people and dance enthusiasts each year, as evidence of that commitment in practice. For a career built on, in her words, passion, rigor, dedication and immense generosity, Descôtes said the Chevalier title was conferred specifically in recognition of that fuller body of work, not simply his achievements on stage. Bolle's Response Accepting the honor, Bolle described himself as deeply moved and filled with gratitude. He called France one of dance's great historic homelands, a place where the art form found a defining part of its own identity, and said receiving the honor felt like being welcomed by a culture that has given dance universal value, one capable of speaking to everyone and crossing every border. He went on to describe a guiding belief behind his own career: that beauty, art and culture shouldn't remain confined to the places where they're born, but should move beyond the stage to reach people directly, especially younger audiences, framing that principle as the throughline connecting his work at La Scala, his UNICEF role, and initiatives like OnDance. He closed by thanking the Ambassador and France's Minister of Culture, saying he accepted the honor with a renewed sense of responsibility to keep sharing dance, its beauty and its values, with even greater passion and dedication going forward. A Career Already Decorated at Home Thursday's ceremony adds to an already extensive list of honors for the Piedmont-born dancer, who was born in Casale Monferrato in 1975. In Italy, Bolle has previously been named Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito, Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito, and Grande Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito, three successive tiers of Italy's own honors system. The French distinction places him alongside a long list of international artists and cultural figures recognized by the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres since its creation, underscoring a reputation that, as French officials themselves noted at the time of the original announcement, has long since crossed well beyond Italy's own borders.

Frescoed spiral staircase: Scala Regia of Villa Farnese (Caprarola) 1559-1573, designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, great Italian Mannerist architect, assistant to Michelangelo. His two publications on classical orders & practical perspective, helped define classical canon.

What is the country north of Rome that was a civilization before Rome existed, and why does almost nobody stop there? Our Tuscia guide starts with a window at the Villa Farnese and ends at Etruscan tombs on the coast road back to the city.

Imagine living in those days in certain cities, & every time you turn around there’s someone in a barn or kitchen or outside your house staging & painting one of these…🙏
There was a cute scene on ‘The Borgias’ where iirc Giulia Farnese was holding a baby goat in her lap, being painted as a unicorn

Ten people in the Villa Farnese on a July Saturday, a palace that doubled for the Vatican on film, and we had it almost to ourselves: that is Tuscia, the volcanic country north of Rome that most drivers pass without stopping.

The character arc of Farnese in Berserk is a journey of discovery. Discovery of ones self when finally out in the world and away from the religious trauma we've been indoctrinated into. She finds out who she is isn't what she was told. I feel that

North of Rome, I sat in a window of the Villa Farnese at Caprarola on a July Saturday and counted maybe ten people in the whole palace. Tuscia is full of places like that.

It bothers me to get the thought that that could give AI mongers ideas.

For what it's worth, I've used this as a sleeping aid, and I figure the narrator's voice helps:

Greg Farnese croons in his own singular style and operates a camera at Citizens Bank Park. His debut album, "Oh No, I'm in Love Again," was produced by Philly jazz pianist Orrin Evans.
