#Fastaval
Well I just learned that when I went to Fastaval in 2013, I was about 35 miles from the birthplace and childhood home of my great great grandmother Inger Kjerstina Pedersdatter. She was born in Aalborg in the 1850s.

Play as long or as short as your group feels for.

I was shocked when playing Montsegur 1244 in the US first time and a game finished in two hours. At Fastaval games would average 5 hours. These days my personal preference is 3-4 hours and then have some things left unexplored.

I came upon the story of the Cathars when playing Ars Magica and felt I wanted to play a game where their story was front and centre. It didn't exist so I had to create it.

I wrote a post about the story of Montsegur 1244, there you will find a longer answer.

The story of Montsegur 1244 - Thoughtful Dane
I created the story game Montsegur 1244 for Fastaval 2008. I felt it was a story that needed to be told and a game that I wanted to play.

Jeg vandt en flaske god rom den aften ved at holde min kæft hele filmen. På den måde var Prometheus skyld i min bedste Fastaval brandert nogensinde.

In the Shadow of Us-hindava is now on the program for Fastaval 2027

Pitching for Fastaval has become easier for me over the years, after realizing they don't want a sales pitch, but rather a concrete description of the scenario.

By accident, I stumbled upon the idea of what became Whirling Witchcraft.

And in some way, I got to hear about Fastaval. At the moment I cannot recall how I learned of it.

But I submitted my little engine building intermezzo. It was nothing like what i had designed before.

Tonight is the last night to send in pitches to Fastaval. @fastaval.bsky.social is a Danish con. But it’s mostly a community.

In 2019, I had dabbled in game design for quite some years. Played with friends in Sweden. We had fun!

new larp alert! -- well, a Fastaval-style scenario really, but you can larp it -- How's Mum Doing? Free to download and use.

It's about families, destructive patterns, generational trauma, and all that kind of troublesome stuff. But framed within a nice summer holiday.

Meanwhile: it's always a mega-logisitics and financial question each August as to whether or not *I myself* submit a scenario to Fastaval....

I still haven’t played. I’m still envious.

(Someone at Fastaval described it to me as a very “Uffe” game, and I’ve been looking for it ever since.)

Fisherman's Wife exists in the best place it can for me -- as a pleasant memory from Fastaval where my fellow player and I for unknown reasons began rhyming our conflict moves.

Fastaval permanently shaped me as a game designer.

If you are interested to know more about this peculiar con, don’t hesitate to ask!

During August, designers can submit their pitches. Please make sure to send in your pitches according to the text in the link!

Mit quest for international brætspilsberømmelse fortsætter her. I Påsken talte vi med Paula Deming der udover at være sjov og skarp, når det kommer til bræt- og rollespil, også har været med i Grey's Anatomy.

Let's just say we all circulate along similar paths!

(My first Fastaval was in 2010, when Julia Ellingboe was GoH and she invited her friends -- Kat and myself -- to join her in Aarhus that year. Changed my life!)

Weird fact: Mike was guest of honor on Fastaval 1995… and 10 years later Greg was the same.

Og det øjeblik er i øvrigt foreviget af Shut up and Sit Down, som jeg havde fornøjelsen af at spille med til Fastaval i 2019. (Mens Grand Tour stadig var under udvikling)

This is sort of the tradition of the Danish con Fastaval. One off games with pre-generated characters and a strong tradition of writing something that's easy for the GM to use. Playtime is often 3-5 hours, though, but each year also has a bunch of novellas. Look at alexandria.dk for lots of games

Yeah, my next Fastaval synopsis is gonna be nerd shit. Deep-dive indo-iranian techno-mystical nerd shit.

I heard that comment in a conversation Monday. I was polite enough to just disagree and move on.

Funny enough, one of the groups playing Montsegur 1244 when it premiered at Fastaval 2008 spent 20+ minutes on the first scene, sitting in a tavern planning the murder of the inquisitor.

The Danish scene did that at Fastaval in 1998.
They created a dogme manifesto and produced a bunch of scenarios.
Among the rules was that the scenarios had to 'systemløst', systemless, meaning without any rules system (which was not uncommon for the period)

My game was inspired by the seriously great Fastaval scenario Old Friends by @jmstar.bsky.social and @olepeder.bsky.social.

It was nominated for an Otto in 3 categories at Fastaval 2016 and playtesting it was my start into game design. Find the script here: alexandria.dk/en/data?scen...

While on my Fulbright in 2010, a friend invited us up from Berlin to hang out at Fastaval in Denmark. The first night in the bar, @montola.bsky.social sold me a copy of his 2008 book Playground Worlds for 20€. I read the entire thing that night.

The next day I joined "game studies" as a discipline.

Since I sort of buried the lede in my latest post...Yep, I won a golden penguin for a game I co-designed called the Touch of Hope (a co-op touch / tactile communication game).

Third time was the charm, and I had an absolute blast in Denmark. Read all about it:
