Collection spotlight: The Odyssey! The Newberry has a wealth of materials related to The Odyssey, from ancient papyrus writings to a range of printed copies. Here is a fragment of Homer's Iliad from around the first century CE. (Homer also wrote The Odyssey, of course.)

Ptolemaic Gladii?
Recently checking the Royal Ontario Museum collection and found two swords, one dated from 300-200 B.C. and one broadly dated from the 1st century B.C. to 1st century A.D., both found in Al-Fayyum (unless I'm mistaken, should be were the famous shield was also found). Any thoughts?

🧵The story of Yorkshire’s old Yeomanry cavalry regiments is a tale of social class, regional pride and military evolution. Raised in 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars, these unique volunteer units were raised by wealthy landowners and manned by local farmers (with their horses) and tradesmen

In a recent book, I argued that the Fayyum portraits are not ancient, but modern objects, created in the 19th century as wonder-machines

I love seeing them at work in the wild
Fayum Mummy Portraits

They come from Roman Egypt, mostly dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE.

Painted on wooden panels, many were placed over the faces of mummified bodies, giving the dead an astonishingly life like presence.

By the 13th century, the relatively difficult and low-status work of peasant grain production in Fayyum has now become nearly the exclusive preserve of Muslims. While the poll tax surely played a role in inducing the poorest to convert, this is hundreds of years after its implementation...

It's also indicative to look at those Christians who remained. Al-Nabulusi counts some 1,142 men in Fayyum still paying the poll tax (ie. Christian) out of a total population of 75,000. Yet these men and their families were almost exclusively concentrated in cities and market towns...

Here's an interesting map of Fayyum, an irrigated region of the Nile Delta southwest of Cairo. The peasantry is now organized in segmentary terms, having adopted the names of storied Arab tribes, in ways that map onto the hydrology of the depression and facilitate cooperation:

Please, please, before you take any of that "we now have Anne Boleyn's real face or maybe it's her mom's" stuff seriously, go read Sonja Drimmer

And before you put that Fayyum portrait on your book/syllabus/conference poster, read this from me:
