The Birth of St. John the Baptist, ca. 1635, by #OrsolaMaddalenaCaccia (Italian, c. 1596-c. 1676). Held by Parrocchia Sant’Antonio di Padova, Moncalvo; source, nmwa.org/blog/nmwa-ex... #womenartists #artherstory #FeastOfStJohnTheBaptist #NativityofStJohntheBaptist #nuntastic
A scene in a well-populated birthing chamber. In the background the mother rests in bed, attended by two women, once of whom seems to be offering her some eggs. In the foreground are two women washing a newborn infant. Around the two women and the baby are at least 7 other women or girls attending to various tasks. In the front center a lamb gazes up at the baby; almost invisible at bottom right is a little dog.

A half-length portrait of a pale-skinned boy, maybe pre-teen or early teens, with longish brown hair and eyes. His chest is bare except for the animal skin slung over his right shoulder to wrap around his waist. body is turned slightly toward the left edge of the painting; he gazes over his left shoulder, past the viewer. With his left arm bent at a 90 degree angle; his left hand caresses the neck of a lamb whose head is just visible at the bottom of the painting. His right hand grasps a crucifix on a long staff, wound around toward the top with white ribbon.

Saint John the Baptist, C17th, by #OrsolaMaddalenaCaccia (Italian, c. 1596-c. 1676). Held by Chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Martino e Stefano, Montemagno; source, artherstory.net/orsola-madda... #womenartists #artherstory #FeastOfStJohnTheBaptist #NativityofStJohntheBaptist #nuntastic
A painting of grown man with a brown beard and long hair, standing in a wilderness setting wearing an animal skin tunic and a red cloak. At his right side is a lamb, with its head toward the left edge of the painting, but turned at 180 degrees to look back at the man. Between his left thumb and forefinger he holds the long staff of a wooden cross from which floats a white scroll with lettering on it. According to Angela Ghirardi, author of the blog post in which this image is reproduced: "At the center of the painting is Saint John, emaciated from fasting. Three little angels rush among the clouds. The symbolic bestiary includes the lamb, the 'Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,' to which the saint points, and the goldfinch, alluding to the Passion of Christ. In the foreground are roses, narcissus, and lily of the valley; all of the flowers are depicted with the utmost care. In the distance is an evocative view of the town of Montemagno, on which the saint extends his protection." Above, three cherubs frolic in the clouds. A cartouche in the lower left corner provides some details of the contract between the patron and the artist's convent to do with the commission of the painting.
