Christ Appears to #StIgnatius, n.d., by #GiovannaGarzoni (Italian, 1600-1670). Held by Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice; sourced from Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali, catalogo.beniculturali.it/detail/Histo... #artherstory #womenartists #FeastofStIgnatius #IgnatiusofLoyola #StIgnatiusofLoyola
At the right of this nearly square painting a haloed, beardless man (Saint Ignatius) with a mustache and a receding hairline, dressed in unrelieved black, stands in a landscape with his elbows bent and his hands lifted out in front of him. Before him, standing on a cloud, is Christ, wearing a red tunic and crown of thorns, reaching up with both hands to grasp the crossbar of the large cross he carries. Above these two figures is a bust-length drawing of God as an old man with white hair and beard, leaning over the edge of a cloud, gazing down, as his left hand rests on an orb. He wears a light (silver?) tunic and a gold cloak. On the ground at Ignatius' feet are his black broad-brimmed hat, staff, and closed red book, presumably a Bible. Trees are visible in the distance. Two rows of text in Roman capital letters in the lower left corner might read S. IGNATIVS. F. R. SOCIET IESV.
