#FebOutlining What idea, character, scene, or theme was the seed of your story? What made you want to keep developing out from that point? How has that seed idea changed since you first had it?

"Should I wear shoes or boots to the event, Klein?" asked Alexander, who was considering a blue ribbon against a white one.

"I think you have more pressing concerns, sir," answered Klein, handing him his pistol.

#FebOutlining Do you make playlists for your works in progress? What are some important songs for your current WIP?
February 5, 2026 at 12:25 PM
#FebOutlining I use both a classic beat sheet following K. M. Weiland's story structure, which uses 3-Act Structure. Once I identify the major plot beats, I fill in the gaps with a basic scenes list.
#FebOutlining What's your outlining process? Do you use a classic beat sheet (e.g. seven-point structure, romance structure, hero's journey)? Do you use the snowflake method (establish key events, then build the complexity and logic)? Do you use spreadsheets, or index cards, or maps with red string?

Well, my horrible little shit (affectionate) is undeniably descended from that horrible little shit (derogatory), D'Artagnan.

I also feel like I'm working through some angst I have about the historical/historical romance fandoms. +
#FebOutlining What are some works that you feel like you're writing in conversation with? These could be comp titles, but they could also be works that you're pushing against--works that are doing something really different from what you're doing. What about these works makes you want to write?

#FebOutlining What are you researching as you work on your current WIP(s)? What are some good resources you've found so far on these topics? How do you keep track of information you've found?

I'm so happy to see so many people already participating in #FebOutlining! It always feels like outlining and prewriting are some of the loneliest parts of writing, when your work isn't yet presentable enough to share with anyone--and it's been so inspiring to be doing this as part of a community. 💚

#FebOutlining What does the main setting--or settings--of your project look like? Share some inspirational pictures, if you have them! (Please remember to use alt text.)

#FebOutlining How does your current project represent a continuation of what you've already created? In what ways does it represent a new direction? How do you hope you'll grow as a writer while you're working on this WIP?

Happy February! What project or projects are you planning to work on for #FebOutlining? What state are they currently in? What are you hoping to accomplish by the end of the month? (If you're past the outlining/prewriting stage, what work were you outlining or prewriting most recently?)
February 1, 2026 at 12:32 PM
#FebOutlining I have some trusted writer friends who I have brainstorming sessions with. I don't normally share my outlines with them, but bouncing around ideas really helps refine them and also makes the pursuit of writing feel much less lonely.
#FebOutlining Do you have anyone with whom you share your work while you're in the outlining or prewriting stage? Or do you prefer not to let anyone see until you have some prose on the page?

#FebOutlining There are two tried and true techniques that I use:

1. Talking with friends to brainstorm ideas
2. Taking a shower

Occasionally, driving a familiar route or washing the dishes works, too.
#FebOutlining How do you solve problems when they arise during outlining/prewriting? Do you talk to a rubber duck, or get feedback from a trusted friend? Do you undo your work to a point before the problem and try again, or do you push through and hope the problem solves itself when you draft?
February 23, 2026 at 1:26 PM
#FebOutlining How do you manage timelines--not just for your story, but for the things that happened before it (and possibly the things that will happen after it)?

#FebOutlining Do you make fancasts for your characters? Who are some of the people you'd cast in your current project(s)?

#FebOutlining MageWIP started out as a college AU of characters from my Vampire: the Masquerade game. 😂 I wanted to explore their relationship in a context outside of the game, but they ended up taking on personalities of their own, becoming their own, unique characters.

#FebOutlining Do you build character profiles as part of your prewriting? How do you do it--character development worksheets, character sheets from a tabletop roleplaying game, spreadsheets to make sure you remember what color everyone's eyes are?

#FebOutlining MageWIP is set on Earth, so I'll use whatever already exists. For any fictional locations, I name them following typical naming conventions for similar existing locations on Earth, whether that's a city or a school or a café.

Usually, I make up names as I need them.
#FebOutlining How do you come up with names for people, places, and things? Do you build a conlang to use as a basis, or set yourself some linguistic rules, or borrow from existing Earth names? Do you make a list of possible names ahead of time, or make up each name as you need it?
