#Felinae
Odysseus is credited as man that invented popular concept called Felinae (read: cat). Actually he has perfected it. Cats existed for a long time already but they lacked something. He made them whimsical (like himself as some noted). And added thing called "purring". Mostly because it annoyed Hades.

Cougars are Felinae and not Panthera so they’re technically small cats

PSA. Cheetas are NOT big cats. "Big cat" us another name for the subfamily of felines called Pantherinae. This houses the genera neofelis and panthera.

Felinae, small cats houses ALL the others (Acinonyx, cheetah) included

its actually not about size, just characteristics.

To cheer myself up for #Caturday, I thought I would do a sub-species profile on the #Carpathian #lynx. It is a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx. #Photography #cat #Felinae #ECK #wildlife #CatsOfBlueSky #cats

This is just Rimworld for me and my self-constructed alien species.

Except in that, I can do what comes naturally for a predatory clan of building sized felinae....

Become raiders of such shocking efficiency that they never have to settle anywhere. Wandering the world as a natural disaster.

Not sharing the article because it annoys me...Felinae now includes Leopardus tilcayo. The Leopardus genus are several species of SMALL cats in the Americas. Think Ocelots. Though...Felinae also includes Cheetahs, Cougars, and house cats...BUT NOT...TIGERS. Hence why, not sharing the article.

ICYMI Both house cats and cheetahs belong to the subfamily Felinae. Neither are in the Pantheria family with the lions, tigers, etc. So Cheetahs seem the most like really big pussycats to me.

#Lamento but the big cats are fucking huge
August 24, 2026 at 3:07 PM
fun fact: the cheetah doesn’t belong - it’s a “big small cat” (subfamily Felinae) not a big cat (subfamily Pantherinae) - it can purr but not roar

Also in the Felinae subfamily is the serval (Leptailurus serval), and by extension the Savannah cat mentioned elsewhere in this thread (which, as a hybrid of two different feline genera, would have the scientific name "Felis catus x Leptailurus serval").

I see the cats have elected a new Pope.

It's part of Felinae, so it's really a small cat. Only Pantherinae roar.

Biggest Pleistocene cats of each felid subfamily (and possibly of all time): Pantherinae: Panthera fossilis, Machairodontinae: Smilodon populator, Felinae: Acinonyx pleistocaenicus.

These early, tree-dwelling carnivores evolved into the Felidae family, which diverged into saber-toothed cats (Machairodontinae) and modern cone-toothed cats (Felinae & Pantherinae).

Yes. They're Leopardus Pardalis, of the genus Leopardus, and subfamily Felinae in the family Felidae.
