Taxonomy vs. Eyesight. 👀

My eyes: "That is a Meadowlark missing its necklace."
Science: "That is a Blackbird."
The Bird: "I am just trying to eat this seed."

The female Bobolink: The most confusing member of the Blackbird family tree.

Fun day of Saturday field work! Helped my mentee Kevin band and find gray catbird nests. Getting around the habitat is no joke, but the weather was gorgeous!

The female Red-winged blackbird, who's not black nor does she have the red patch on the wings, is still a beautiful bird, if #underrated. Her plumage's cryptic coloration and patterns look amazing in full sunlight. She's my #BirdOfTheDay.

Happy Female Bird Day!

Female Bird Day is held annually during the last weekend of May and represents a growing movement to elevate awareness of female birds in ornithology, conservation, and birding.

The first paper of your PhD is always so exciting! 🤩 An all-#Galbatross effort, "A focus on females can improve science and conservation!" See press release (www.audubon.org/news/researc...) and the study here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...! #FemaleBirds #FemaleBirdDay
In Research, Ignoring Female Birds Harms Scientific Understanding
A new study shows that ecological research often ignores or excludes data on female birds and behavior, resulting in erroneous assumptions on conservation.

Red-winged blackbird, female
Not a black bird with red wings, but the species is named after the male, as they normally are 🪶

The swamp holds many mysterious powers, a small handful of which are actually useful, such as the ability to force the males to quiet down so we can hear the ladies speak.

The female brown thrasher has an important message to deliver.

"Cheer up," she says.

If you could rename Red-winged Blackbirds to be more descriptive of males AND females what would you name them?

Full disclosure: I love the blackbird names because they are so descriptive. But the females so often get overlooked. This is just for fun!

Went to check on the Limpkin nest at the lake, and there she was, rearranging her eggs! She spends quite a bit of time shoring up the nest, which is built on floating vegetation. Just a joy to watch 🪶

No mask, just snacks. 🐛

We saw the masked male last week (complaining about his name), but the female Common Yellowthroat has a totally different look. No black mask, just a subtle yellow glow and a very large lunch.

Science has historically overlooked female birds, leading to a partial view of these species' biology, ecology, and contributing to real-world conservation consequences.
