some folks here are—perhaps—not old enough to remember a time when high school students like me spent years immersed in beat poetry & memorizing poets like Lawrence Ferlinghetti and e.e. cummings. the latter of whom never had to do battle with auto-correct & was never coerced to capitalize i.

Laura, I had a dream last night of a repeating scene of Ferlinghetti and "Baseball Canto." He was talking to someone about baseball, not reciting the poem. In my dream the person he spoke to was Frank O'Hara, or so it seemed. Beats move on to New York School, at least in my dreams.

Last planks & pilings of Blanche’s removed by the city. It was a funky SF cafe in the 60’s into the 90’s, at 4th St on Mission Creek, visited by laborers, cultural figures, writers, & artists, including poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, author Herbert Gold, sculptor Ruth Asawa, & columnist Herb Caen.

Look closely! An eagle-eyed customer spotted The Phinney by Post Book crammed into a chaotic stack in their offices alongside once-and-future Nobelists. Heady company! www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/b...

she was right for him entirely
he followed her into
the playland of that evening
where the headlong meeting
of their ephemeral flesh on wheels
hurtled them forever together

Abandon All Despair Ye Who Enter Here
First visited City Lights Bookstore in fall 1978; was back in 1979; and between AHAs and now HSBs almost annual pilgrimages. I’ve been in store when the late Larry Ferlinghetti was in, but my visits usually at night, too late. #BookSky #SkyPhotography #Beats

Gary Snyder is still alive, age 96. One of my friends in NYC saw Ezra Pound and his long time mistress Olga Rudge at graduation at Hamilton College circa 1968. The poets born in the last of the 19th Century have passed. Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti died t 101.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The world is a beautiful place
to be born into
if you don’t mind happiness
not always being
so very much fun
if you don’t mind a touch of hell
now and then
just when everything is fine
because even in heaven
they don’t sing
all the time

Excerpt from "I Am Waiting" Lawrence Ferlinghetti tinyurl.com/5n7mha3j
I am waiting
for the meek to be blessed
and inherit the earth
without taxes
and I am waiting
for forests and animals
to reclaim earth as theirs
and I am waiting
for a way to be devised
to destroy all nationalisms
w/o killing
