I made good on my resolution yesterday to use what I have rather than spending money on new stuff. The perspective was challenging but I'm still pleased with this ink and watercolour of Ferryquay Gate in Derry (Northern Ireland).

One of my besties is a Derry girl which is what brought me there 🙂
An ink and watercolour view of Ferryquay Gate in Derry, aka Londonderry, aka Derry/Londonderry, aka Stroke City, aka The Maiden City (thus named because its walls were never breached). This original gate here in the city walls used to have a drawbridge but the current version isn't really a gate at all, just a massive vehicle archway and two smaller pedestrian archways. It's made out of stone and this version dates back to in 1866.

347 years ago this month, 13 apprentices closed Ferryquay Gate (and then the other three gates) to keep the army of Catholic, Divine-right King James II from garrisoning Derry in place of the new Protestant, Parliament-ruled King William III.

The Concern Bookshop in Ferryquay Street was opened in 2016 and has proved to be great success. The shop relies on donations of books from local people and is staffed entirely by volunteers. It has raised £80,000 this year.

Foyle Pride Parade: Saturday 23 August This Foyle Pride parade will take place on Saturday 23 August. Participants are asked to assemble from 1pm at North West Transport Hub/Waterside Train Station, Waterside Link. The parade will commence at 2pm sharp (Route: Duke St, Craigavon Bridge Carlisle Rd, Ferryquay St, Shipquay St finishing at Guildhall Sq). In line with the objects of NIPSA which is to promote equal opportunities for all members and to develop positive policies to promote equality of opportunity, NIPSA is supporting the festival and pride day. NIPSA LGBTQI+ flags and banner will be carried in the parade. We are asking members to assemble from 1pm and to keep an eye out for the NIPSA flags. On behalf of the General Council, we wish to encourage branches and members to take part in the Foyle Pride Parade this Saturday 23 August 2025.
