Data centers, which consume vast amounts of copper for electrical infrastructure, cooling systems, and network wiring, are exploring the use of fiber optics to reduce power consumption. Chris Sharp, chief technology officer at Digital Reality, states that the industry is moving away from copper, noting that up to 70 tonnes of copper are used in computer servers and 20 tonnes in network wiring within a typical 100MW data center. The shift to photonics, which uses light instead of electrons to transmit data, promises significant energy savings by reducing heat generation, a major factor in cooling requirements. Callum Littlejohns of Cornerstone Labs emphasizes that photonics can transmit multiple data streams simultaneously over a single channel, increasing capacity. Peter O'Brien of the Tyndall Research Institute notes that while photonics has been researched for years, it is now ready for widespread application, aided by support from companies like Nvidia. However, challenges remain, including manufacturing complexities, global supply chain distribution, and the need for new skills in installation and maintenance. Optical components are sensitive to heat, requiring strict thermal management, and the transition involves integrating different engineering traditions and supply chains. Despite these hurdles, the industry believes that scaling up photonics manufacturing, leveraging existing electronics manufacturing knowledge, will lower costs and make the technology viable for broader adoption. Companies like Resolight.ai are proposing architectures that replace electronic network switches with all-optical devices to further reduce energy use by eliminating data conversion between photons and electrons. While the full benefits of optical networking will require further advancements, the current focus is on scaling up production and addressing engineering challenges to make data centers more energy-efficient.
