Doctors in this country are in crisis.

Many are leaving the profession, retiring too soon or emigrating.

In the interest of our NHS and patient safety, we must look after the welfare of doctors.

Thought for the day - 24 hour on calls for anaesthetists in busy hospitals should be a thing of the past. #fatigue #fightfatigue #tired #aoa #rcoa

Thanks to @peterprinsleymp.bsky.social for highlighting the findings of our #FightFatigue campaign last night in parliament.

Our campaign revealed 50% of respondents had an accident or near miss driving home after a shift and 84% were too tired to drive.

Through our #FightFatigue campaign, we work to raise awareness of the impact of fatigue, including the threat to both patient and staff safety. It's time for healthcare professions and NHS managers to acknowledge that working at night is not the same as working in the day. anaesthetists.org/Fatigue

The @hssib.bsky.social investigation into the impact of staff fatigue shows that fatigue poses a direct and indirect risk to patient safety and to the wellbeing of the workforce.

We contributed to the report and support the recommendations.

Attempting normal sleep pre night shift extremely difficult on a day like this - BBQs, lawnmowers, shouting, heat in room topping 30. Poor quality sleep. Access to dedicated rest facilities very important during 12.5 hour shift #FightFatigue #anaesthetists #NHSstaff @AAGBI

Feel really strongly about #FightFatigue. I’ve commuted 60-90 minutes regularly throughout my career. It is scary. Somehow sleeping or having a place for rest can be seen as weak, not a team player, , etc, etc. That needs to change. Night shifts are not normal physiologically

@AAGBI has some great resources to #FightFatigue - this checklist for safety might help, may even save a life

I know is a biased Twitter poll. But rather shocking #FightFatigue https://twitter.com/morefluids/status/973980413008982023

People may assume that #teamnightshift workers are well rested before coming in for a 12-13 night shift, another reason access to rest facilities is not prioritised. Many work have slept a fraction of normal sleep. Dangerous #PatientSafety implications #FightFatigue #sleep #night

Very interesting so far. Wish I could have broken down 5-7 hours more as big difference between 5 hours sleep and 7. One things clear. Sleep is poor. Keep answering! #WorldSleepDay #FightFatigue

Not surprised by these poll results. Though should raise concern. Rest facilities are extremely important to #FightFatigue when working #NightShift #PatientSafety #cultureshift https://twitter.com/morefluids/status/974537915911913472
