#OTD 1685, the Duke of Monmouth slips away and joins his fleet of three ships waiting off the Dutch coast. Onboard are 80 officers and arms for the 3000 recruits ready in England.

#OTD 1685 Monmouth's forces beat-up the Militia stationed at Bridport. After a brisk early morning fight that sees Monmouth's Cavalry flee but the Infantry march back in triumph. The Dorset Militia fought well. Honours are even after the first clash of arms.

#OTD 1685 was the forgotten Battle of Ardkinglas in Scotland.
Although documented in letters & the Gazette, this event has been lost time. Maybe because it saw King James II/VII's forces defeated by Argyll's soldiers.

#OTD 1685, this evening Monmouth puts Mr Dare & Col. Venner ashore at Chideock to spread the word. Venner is to raise Taunton for the Duke.

Over the next 24 hours over 3,000 men start heading to Lyme. The mobilisation has begun.

In 1685, Monmouth Declared War, this was according to the established principles of a Just War. He paid & uniformed the men, turning them from rebels into Soldiers, offering them protection from retribution. This was no 'Pitchfork Rebellion'.
