Committee votes to support $1990 grant for Burnaby's redevelopment initiative at 629 First Street

By KATRINA BRANDON   AFTER months of uncertainty, the state budget eased pressure for the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council (GTLC). GTLC runs community education programs and projects for youth, multicultural citizens, and those hoping to upskill and gain more opportunities to work within the community. GTLC also provides ongoing support to the community, particularly those in need. GTLC received $450,000 in the budget to develop skills and reconnect those who are unemployed or experiencing long-term unemployment with education and training. “I’m pleased to share that we have been successful in securing state government funding as part of today’s state budget announcement,” GTLC secretary Steve Dodd said after the budget was handed down. “This is a significant outcome for our organisation and reflects the strength of our collective efforts and advocacy. The funding will support the delivery of our community education programs for another 12 months.” Over the last few years, GTLC has run projects such as Domestic Building and Construction, A Cup of Hospitality, Community Turf Force (garden maintenance and skills), Let’s Get Driving and Labouring Fundamentals. With support from other local groups, GTLC aims to drive positive change in the community, ensuring everyone has access to opportunities and services. They also hope to inspire people to pursue their passions, build connections in the community, and foster a sense of belonging and self-identity. “This funding recognises that education doesn’t just happen in classrooms, it happens in communities, relationships and lived experiences,” Mr Dodd said. “The impact goes far beyond formal learning outcomes. This is an investment in people, not just programs. “Community education changes lives in ways that spreadsheets don’t always capture. When you invest early and locally, the benefits ripple across generations boosting skills, confidence and connection. “This funding strengthens the fabric of our community, supporting people not just to learn, but to thrive, connect, and contribute.”
