Paul Bara Special Club Brut Grand Cru Champagne 2016, France Pale lemon in color. Strong nose and medium in body with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity, and medium plus size bubbles. Showing limes, lemons, green apples, light earth, yeast, herbs, light brioche and minerals. Nice finish with limes and light marzipan notes. This is a very tasty 10 year old Champagne. Rich and fresh tasting. Complex and interesting. Still very young, and needs 5 years in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Easy drinking, nicely balanced and better after 45 minutes of airtime. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Aged for 6 years on the lees. Disgorged in 2023. 12.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $130.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2022, Napa Valley, California Pale yellow in color. Strong nose of oak, vanilla, yellow apples, citrus and spices. Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs. Dry and fruit forward on the palate with citrus, apples, pears, light earth, cedar, vanilla and spices. Long finish with limes and almonds. This is a very tasty Chardonnay from Napa Valley. Creamy and fruit forward. Still young, but already enjoyable even by itself. A bit oaky at this point, which will change in the next few years. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years and see how it evolves. Better when properly chilled, and needs 30 minutes to open up properly. Good by itself or with food. 100% Chardonnay grapes were aged on the lees for 9 months in (35% new) French Oak barrels. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $40.

Pellet Estate Pellet Vineyard Merlot 2018, Napa Valley, California It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Deep purple in color with a wide purplish rim. Strong nose of black plums, cooked cherries, currents, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, light earth, peppercorn, mediterranean spices and dark chocolates. Medium plus in body and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, raspberries, sweet strawberries, light oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, earth and peppercorn. Spicy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This 7 year old Merlot from Napa Valley is fruit forward and rich. Elegant and complex with a soft mouthfeel. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, when more red fruits show up. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. I had this vintage 4 years ago, and the nose is much nicer now. Really enjoyed it once it opened up. This Single Vineyard is spicy and entertaining. Tangy and interesting. Feels like a Napa Merlot, with a Right Bank Bordeaux twist. Tasty, and good by itself or with food. A tiny production of only 300 bottles. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $100.

Red and blue fruits on the nose with chocolate notes, light oak, spices, light vegetables, herbs and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity. Dry on the palate, with black currants, blueberries, sweet cherries, light cedar, earth, herbs, chocolates, tobacco leaf, peppercorn and a hint of green tea. Long finish with fine-grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This 7 year old Red Blend from Napa Valley's Stags Leap District is drinking very nicely now. Fruit forward and tasty. Soft, smooth and spicy. Well balanced and complex. Needs 3 hours in the decanter to open up properly, so be patient. Will continue to age nicely over the next five to seven years. A blend of 52% Cabernet Franc, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec, 3% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 80% French oak barrels (30% new) and 20% American oak barrels. A small production of only 9 barrels. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $65.

Nose of citrus, limes, green apples, light peaches, light oak, wax, light vanilla and minerals. Medium-bodied with medium plus acidity. Crisp and refreshing. Dry on the palate with limes, green apples, light grapefruits, light oak, spices, earth, herbs and light vegetables. Tangy finish with limes and grapefruits. This is a delicious Chardonnay from California. Spicy and complex, with light oak notes to compliment it. Tangy and interesting. Nicely balanced, and neither tart nor bitter, which is how I like it. Needs 30 minutes of airtime to open up properly, and better when not very cold. This Single vineyard Chardonnay feels young and fresh, and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years and see how it evolves. Fruit forward and elegant. Easy drinking and good by itself or with food. Aged on its lees in (30% new) French Oak barrels for 14 months. Vegan and unfintered. A small production of only 6,600 bottles. 13.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $75.

Fresh nose of citrus, light yeast and spices. Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity, and medium size bubbles. Dry on the palate with limes, lemons, green apples, light grapefruits, yeast, minerals, herbs, light earth and white pepper. Nice and spicy finish with herbs and light almonds. This is a tasty Sparkling wine from England. Still young, but already showing nice complexity. This 9 year old English Sparkling is nicely balanced and elegant. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. A blend of 98% Pinot Noir and 2% Pinot Meunier. Aged for 5 years on the lees. Disgorged in 2022. Made in the Traditional Method. 11.5% alcohol by volume. 90 points. $40.

It is time for my #FridayCabernetFix. Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, blackberries, black plums, figs, tobacco leaf, dark chocolates, cedar, licorice, cola, Mediterranean spices, and black pepper. Full-bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs. Dry and fruit-forward on the palate with blackberries, black currants, cooked cherries, cedar, toast, light vanilla, figs, light raisins, chocolates spices and peppercorn. Long finish with fine-grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a gorgeous 9-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Rich and powerful, with great balance. Fruit-forward and elegant. Easy-drinking and complex. Drinking beautifully right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime. I had this vintage 3 years ago, and it is drinking even better now. Will continue to age nicely over the next 10 years. Delicious by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Aged for 28 months in French oak barrels. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 95 points. $400.

Showing plums, currants, light cedar, earth, herbs, light vanilla, licorice, light vegetables, coffee and black pepper. This 20 year old Merlot from Napa Valley is still drinking nicely, but past its peak. Elegant and interesting. This is a nice surprise, as I didn't see it drinking so nicely at this age. Needs an hour to open up in the bottle. Good by itself, and better with food at this point. I paired it with light appetizers. 14.4% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $25.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, limes, light watermelon, under ripe cherries, minerals, light yeast and spices. Long finish with tangy cranberries. This is a delicious Sparkling Rosé from Oregon. Elegant and nicely balanced. Fruit forward and easy drinking. Complex and entertaining. This 7 year old Sparkling is still young, but already drinking beautifully, and will continue to age nicely in the 5 to 7 years. I had the 2017 vintage a year ago and loved it as well. Good by itself as a sipping wine. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Aged on the lees for 5 years. Disgorged in 2024. A small production of less than 3,000 bottles. 12.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $75.

Rich and nicely balanced. Tangy and spicy. Still young, and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. I've had a few vintages of this Champagne, and this one seems less approachable at the moment. Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food, like fresh seafood. A blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir. Aged for 7 years on the lees. 12% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $100.

Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, light oak, spices, dark chocolates, coffee, tobacco leaf, herbs, black pepper and black tea. Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This 19 year old Grenache from Howell Mountain is still drinking beautifully. Elegant and complex with a soft mouthfeel. The high alcohol is well integrated by now. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 45 minutes of airtime. Was probably better a few years ago, but it is still delicious. Always nice to try these aged wines. 100% Grenache grapes were aged in used French Oak barrels. 15.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $75.
