![At an early age Stevens was entrusted by his father with the family business affairs, and in 1821 at the age of 26 he assumed full responsibility for the Stevens estate in Hoboken and other properties. Also in 1821, he developed the "Jeef Beef," a cast-iron plow with a curved moldboard and replaceable heel piece. The plow was popular among New Jersey farmers. I always thought a Jeff Beef was that overwhelming two horse dump wagon odor one would smell when trapped in a vertical vestibule car ventilated by a closed fireroom forced draft system.

OTD in 1942, the US Navy suffered a defeat at the Battle of Tassafaronga, losing the heavy cruiser Northampton, with the heavy cruisers New Orleans, Minneapolis and Pensacola heavily damaged by Japanese torpedoes. Considered the third worse US Navy defeat behind Pearl Harbor and Savo Island.
